meat-eater and my parents won't let me. They say I will become fat, my arteries will clog, my kidneys will be ruptured by the excessive proteins, my joints will be devastated by the uric acid and I will get constipated. Should i take a supplement to ensure i get enough vitamins and minerals?

They're right.Wait until you're done growing to become a meat eater.Make sure you take a multivitamin/fiber supplement when you do become a meat eater to make up for all of the lost fiber, make sure you also have Lipitor just in case.

edit:You were joking weren't you?

I hate to say this but your parents are full of s**t! My reason for this is because if you eat lean meats, such as baked or grilled fish, or poultry and even lean red meats none of those things will happen. As far as taking a multi vitamin, that doesn't hurt anyone whether you eat meat or not. I have eaten meat all of my life and trust me it hasn't killed me yet. It's when you go over the amount of calories a day and eat bigger potions that you start gaining weight. Come into the light and experience the taste of meat. I guarantee you will like it. It has soo many flavors. Also, many different ways to cook it. You don't know what your missing!!!!!!!

that's a weird situation, 98% of parents would go the other way.. meaning they won't let their kids become vegetarian/ or vegan.

you are lucky. they're right, stick to not eating meat. your body will thank you in the future. I wish more parents would be like yours.

don't even worry about getting protein or vitamins. there is a lot of vegetarian and vegan food full of protein and vitamins.

All those health problems come not from eating meat in general, but from eating excessive amounts of certain kinds of meat. You should stick mostly to fish and white meats, since it is the red ones which cause the most issues, and keep your fried foods to a minimum. Provided you keep eating a healthy and balanced share of your vegetables, you should have no need for extra vitamins.

A word of warning, though: If you've been raised vegetarian, as it seems you have, you should ease into the omnivore status slowly. When your body is unused to eating meat, it can make you a little sick to your stomach at first, almost like mild food poisoning, esp. the bloodier meats. Start with fish and the like, since they'll be much milder.

Oh, and an add on, don't listen to the above comment about needing lipitor "just in case." Unless you have something wrong with you and at a very young age already have cardiovascular problems, there is absolutely NO way you'll need to medicate yourself in that way. That is veg nazi propaganda. Stick to the healthier, lower fat meats, and you should be fine.

Good luck.

your parents are right, going meatless helped save my life, i feel better, look better and am healthier than ever, must admit to the occasional buffalo steak or burger though. Supplements if from natural sources are best

Meat is okay in moderation, just don't overdo it, especially on red meat. A word of warning: Meat sets heavy in your stomach. There's nothing dangerous about it, but it can make you feel like like you've eaten a lot more than you have.

Oh, and, if you're underage, you have to abide by your parents' rules a little longer. And if they give in and let you eat meat, you should still remember to eat a well-balanced diet.

Oh, if only the tables really were turned and parents worried over their kids' decision to eat nasty, unhealthy flesh foods!
