Use buttercream for her cake. I've worked with both, and for decorating, I don't really like whipped cream icing. It just doesn't pipe as well as buttercream. Good luck :)

Go for buttercream. Everyone likes it, and it will hold up MUCH better than whipped cream icing, which may droop.
If you want a buttercream that gets stiff, I recommend Wilton's recipe (see link). If you want a softer icing, here's my quick and easy recipe for a delicious buttercream. You can color it pink or blue for the shower. This makes enough to frost an 8" two-layer cake, or a 9x13 single layer.
6 Tbsp butter
1/8 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
1 pound confectioners sugar
2 egg whites
1 to 2 Tbsp milk
Cream butter salt and vanilla. Add sugar alternately with egg whites, beating well after each addition. Gradually add milk until smooth but still thick enough to spread.

Buttercream holds up better. I melt a bit of white chocolate with cream till its smooth, cool, and add to your basic buttercream recipe, also add a 1/4 c. of believe it or not, cake flour; this cuts that ultra sweet taste. Also, make sure to use a good vanilla extract.

Butter cream is the better choice. If you need some ideas for some different style shower cakes look at the first site below. You have to sign up to view them, but there is no cost to do this. The second site will give you all the help you'll need for the shower. The third site will give you a ' gazillion ' shower games to play.

A cute centerpiece idea is to use 2 different sized baby bottles, a small teddy bear and small wodden blocks grouped together in a decorative way. Insert fresh faced daisies ( in 2 different colors ) into the water filled baby bottles. You should also do a web search to find a cute baby card ( that's blank inside ).. Give each guest one that they could use to write some sage advice for the new mother.Teach her some things that you had to learn the hard way.

I love the whipped frosting. I have no clue about decorating cakes, my mom did for years for a bakery. She still sticks to butter recipe, but sometimes thins it with fluff or whip cream. I dont know if it hold up better, I think she made the roses and other decos with reg frosting though. I am not for sure. How about making a strawberry jello cake with whip cream frosting, then take and make her a "decorated cake" another way.
My aunt made one of my family members this idea, and I have made them for all of my freinds, cute and useful.
Make a diaper cake, iit can be the center peice as a decorated cake, but they can take it home after. People then can enjoy a cake but untraditional.
Take diapers and spiral them for a base, then smaller on top, like a teir cake, or snowman effect. I then take baby blankets and fold them, pin around the diapers"frosting". The fold will act like pockets to insert items. sugg. shampoo, thermoter, brush, comb, booties, caps, powder, etc.
I do throw in a bottle of tynel for the mom, LOL and a chocolate bar and some bath salts or bubbles.
i have seen theese on the web now, but its fun to create your own, and more personalized.
take frozen strawberries(frozen or fresh) add to jello, let set. take angel food cake, pond cake, what have u, and drizzle with the strawberry juice or some of the jello. Add whip cream when set to the jello mix, layer with cakeKinda like a trifle. top with fresh berries. ( I added liqour to the cake once it was godiva choc. booze, mm to die for it was choc. covered strawberries with a twist.
Good luck

1/4 c. butter, softened
2 tsp. vanilla

Whipped cream isn't stable enough. You would either need to stabalize it or make "whipped icing".
It really depends on how you want it to look. For the "grocery store" look with borders, etc. Whipped will be fine. For the "bakery" look (stripes, polka dots, etc.) use b-cream.
Good luck.

You can make stabilized whipcream by adding gelatin powder to your recipie. Whipped cream frosting is my favorite.
