Of course it is wrong. Would you eat a parent, sibling or child you love? Even if it were legal? Of course not. Why should it be different with animals?
That person who compared cats with cows - how can you love one animal and not another? That makes no sense at all. Just because dogs are cuter? I think cows are very cute too. And smart. Pigs are more intelligent than dogs. Did you know that?
And the person with the Bible reference. Please leave religion out of these discussions. Thanks. It's just not relevant.

wrong and right are debatable concepts.
i think you need to think about this. is it right to you? if it isn't, then maybe you should explore vegetarianism/veganism.
some people believe you cannot be a true animal lover if you eat them. i'm not saying it's right, but think about that statement. Is it okay, in your mind, to profess to love animals but continue contributing to a system where we kill animals in abundance?
Some people make distinctions between animals for food and animals for pleasure and that it is "okay" to eat animals like cows and pigs because they are bred for this kind of thing.
Not saying any of these are right or wrong, but think about both sides and see how you lean. As you can see from the comments here, no one is going to have a definite answer for you.

It depends. Do you feel guilty?
If so, do you think you would feel less guilty if you went vegetarian? If you chose free range animals?
It's all about your personal ethical choice. To me, I feel there are certain animals I cannot eat. However, my loved ones eat plenty of meat, and I would never try and change that. You have to make choices that are at peace with your own conscience.

Personally, I do think it's wrong, which is why I don't do it. Most people seem to have a disconnect between the cute little puppies and kitties that they love and the cows and pigs that they eat. I think if people really bothered to confront the fact that there is no difference between a pig and a puppy in terms of the ability to suffer and feel pain and fear, that there would be more people giving up the eating of flesh. But most people are comfortable with the ignorance-is-bliss approach. I think you have to admit that there's a huge degree of hypocrisy in saying you love animals but knowlingly contributing to their torture and murder every day of your life. If you can deal with the hypocrisy, that's your business, but you asked so there's my opinion...

Not if you don't think there is. It would be a tad weird if the types of animals you love also happen to be the ones you eat, though...
(Cows are damn cute.)

I grew up on my grandparents farm and I made pets of the chickens, piglets. My grandma would sometimes cook one of the chickens when money was tight. I always refused to eat dinner on those occaisions. We had pet rabbits, so of course that was not in my diet either. My brother would hunt deer, but the thought of eating venison made me sick.

No, But even as a person who eats meat there are still steps you can take to help cut out cruelty and that is buy your meat from the free range and organic suppliers granted it costs little more but at least your love of animals is not held in dispute.

Of course not, they're delicious for a reason. ;-)
It's in our nature -- we're omnivores. It varies from culture to culture, but the bulk of our diet, historically, was plant-based, with the occasional scavenged egg, some meat when we had the opportunity, etc. With the development of agriculture and the ability to keep livestock, our diets expanded a bit and meat came to be a more regular part of our way of life.
I would say people today eat entirely too much meat, but the thought of ridding your diet of it altogether is pretty silly. All things in moderation.

I think it's contradictory, but I'm not going to waste my time or yours trying to force you to agree with me. The choice is up to you.

I agree with Res. The choice is up to you. The best thing to do is educate yourself and then make the best choice for you based upon what you have learned.
