I am a white 26 year old woman who went to the hygenist yesterday and my blood pressure was 134/95. They remarked to me and left it alone. I think chalking it up to fear. The commented that that was high for me though. Today I went back for a filling and it was still high, they sent me over to the clinic where they said I have to come in everyday and monitor my BP on a chart. How serious is this? I'm worried because if something happens to me I don't know who will take car of my kids.

A diastolic reading ( the bottom # ) over 90 is considered Stage I hypertension. You are rather young for such but it does happen. Do you smoke? That raises BP. Do you drink a lot of caffeinated beverages? Not just coffee but soft drinks. That raises BP. Diet plays a minor role. If you eat foods that are high in sodium, you might cut back on them. My rule of thumb is, if the sodium content is higher than 35%, I put it back (referring to frozen entrees or canned veggies). The reasoning is I eat 3 meals/day so I don't need more than a third of my sodium from any 1 meal.
Untreated hypertension can lead to major health problems when you get older so it's best to catch it early. Buy yourself a blood pressure monitor at the drug store, I use a wrist monitor instead of upper arm. Take your pressure every day for 2 weeks at the same time of day. You're looking for a consistently high reading, as opposed to a 1 time reading that may have spiked due to other factors like doctor/dentist visits. That's called 'white coat syndrome' and it is known to raise blood pressure - which is why you want to take readings at home.
Good luck.

Blood presure is the pressure the blood has when going through the heart. The top number systolic is the number for the pressure of the blood going to your body from the heart the diastolic is when the ventricle relaxes and fills again with blood.

When the number on the bottom is high it means the heart has to pump too hard to fill completely with blood before it contracts again and that causes the other side of the heart to pump harder to get the blood to the body faster so it can get more oxygen.

When the bottom number is up so is the top number.

See what your dr tells you it may be controlled by diet or medication and diet.

Either way, you need to have a will so the children will be cared for.

I am a single parent also and my will says to have my daughter go to a boarding school if I die that way she won't end up in foster care. You have to specify which boarding school you want. My daughter is going to a free school for single parents it's called Girard School in Phiadelphia PA. You can google your state and see what they have.

Good Luck

It could simply be a fear of the dentist. Normal BP is 115-120/ 70-80. Your BP is slightly high, but just monitor it for a few days at the clinic and average the amounts. It's nowhere near a heart attack. I'd be worried if it doesnt come down in a month or so. But all it takes to lower your BP is a little exercise and better eating habits and it can reduce it back to normal. If this doesnt work, there's medicine that could control it, but I dont see that in your case.

this is not high blood pressure. the number 95 could be lower like some where between 70 and 85. But you could have been nervous/ anxious for your dentist appointment.
