There are actually 8 different kinds of herpes viruses. Usually when a person says "herpes" they are referring to either cold sores (oral herpes) or genital herpes.

Cold sores are usually caused by herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV1), but they can also be caused by herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV2).

Genital herpes is usually caused by HSV2, but like cold sores, it can also be caused by HSV1.

There's a lot of confusion about herpes out there. One reason is that there are two types of herpes, caused by two similar viruses. One type is herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and the other type is herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2). Both types of virus are very contagious.
