The Internet seems to indicate that sometimes enzymes in cheese are not vegetarian.

There is an enzyme called rennet that is used in the cheese making process. This enzyme is used to separate out the milk solids from the whey. The solids are then used to form cheese. The enzyme found in the stomach of calves to help with the digestion of milk.

There are rennet products on the market that are derived from totally vegetable sources. However, the traditional source of the product is from cow stomach linings. So... your cheese can't be guaranteed to be vegetarian.

Its probably to do with the cheese. A lot of cheese is made using rennet, an anzyme derived from the stomach of cows and other dairy animals. You can get cheese made without this but it will always say that it is suitable for vegans/vegetarian.

Ops, sorry. Someone has already said that.
Hope it helps anyway.

Rennet is what they are referring to. Rennet is the lining from the stomach of a cow or sheep and it is often used in the making of cheese.

That's why. You CAN get rennet-free cheese and it is often sold as "vegetarian cheese".

Regardless of that, you've just helped me decide what I'm having for dinner.......

Well, it's lacto-vegetarian. You don't kill any animals to get their milk.

Also, if you want to stay totally away from meat products, their is soy cheese, etc.
