People get angry because we are not really ok to just invent our own definitions for words.
If I said "Sugar funky flub flub chariot" would you know what i mean ?
I I said i was a "devout Muslin and spent all my time in a synagogue" would muslims think "thats ok, you are entitled to your own definition"
Probably not. thats because we have the language and dictionaries to aide communication.
Seeing people pull it apart is really disrespectful to those that do know the meanings of words like Vegetarian and are loyal to the definition.
flexarian is a corruption of the word vegetarian to try and create some false association. If you deny the attempt at the connection, why not call your self a Flexist or something. Or better still, why do you feel the need to adopt a label when you are likely a person of normal mainstream diet choice.
Its not "drama", it's common sense and the annoyance ( not anger ) comes from years of mis-information by people using made up words.
By the normal use of the word "flexitarian" then every meat-eater would be a flexitarian. This is plainly silly.
You often find questions like yours here, you find virtually no support in the answers, and you carry on with your falsehood. What is the point is "asking" a question if you are blind to popular opinion. It doesn't make you unique, nor your "own person", it makes you ignorant to normal opinion and the thruth.
Its also very interesting to note that the majority of people who call themselves "flexitarians" are teenagers. Its something they grow out of.

It's just a word. And all words have an origin somewhere and gradually become either integrated into the language or fall into disuse. To claim that the only words that are "right" are the ones in dictionaries at the present time, is really rather insipid and shallow thinking.
Language is a dynamic entity. It changes continually as different entities struggle to articulate an experience, to describe something, or in this case to define their diet.
I'm hearing the word "flexarian" and "flexitarian" more and more in the course of my travels. The sensed meaning is one who is eating consciously--i.e. is concerned and mindful about balance and moderation and just healthy lifestyle in mind and body. I would be a flexarian or flexitarian if I were inclined to labels.
I see that as a good thing, since the "mainstream" diet is not balanced, full of empty calories, unhealthy and basically junk and people want to somehow separate themselves from that milieu --- so they "create" a new word to aid their differentiation.
It's quite simple and has been going on since humankind began the spoken and written word.

I do get tired of people saying "I'm vegetarian but I eat fish."
I think designations like "flexitarian" are kind of silly, but to each his own.
I don't like rhubarb, so I guess I could say I'm a nonrhubarbarian, but it sounds like some kind of primative warrior.

I am not angry.
If you eat fish once every five years, you aren't vegetarian, you are just pretending.
"Flexitarian" means believer of flex or flexing. That sounds so stupid, why would you WANT to call yourself that?

Probably because we are passionate about the subject, because while we play around finding new words for meat-eaters, animals are suffering and dying.
If you turned vegan, at least things would be clear ;-)
Go vegan!
