It depends on the region. If it's Madras/southern, I'd love moong masala dosa, which can be very impressive to look at and pleasant to eat - a large and delicate lentil-pastry cylinder with vegetarian filling. Ask for mild the first time around. Round out your order with one curry dish, and ask the host for his or her favorite.
Punjabi/Pakistani/North India cuisine has less curry and generally more meat. I love lamb rogan josh, a hearty stew; channa masala, chickpeas in light tomato base (though some restaurants undercook it); and matter paneer, "peas and cheese". Get a nice paratha to go with it, and wash it down with a cold Kingfisher.
Since there are three of you, if it's North Indian, get three different breads and compare. I love chappati, and my kids could live on cheese stuffed naan, which isn't traditional, but the keema (beef) naan is.
It's not even breakfast time, and I'm hungry just thinking about it.
---
And I second powerplayer's recommentation of gulab jamun for dessert! Especially if it's locally made.

Ask the hostess or host to recommend a dish that they think all of you would like. They are usually very good about suggestions of that nature. I like most Indian foods, the hotter the better (spicy), same as Thai foods, other Asian foods. In general I like anything that is considered to be food. Including domestic animals. But that is just me. Seriously though, the host at most restaurants can give good recommendations that you will probably enjoy. Not too hot, but very tasty. Good luck, enjoy your meal.

Tandori Chicken or Tikki Chicken. They have plenty of chicken dishes. One that is very good, but very HOT is Chicken Vindaloo. The naan is very good especially the one with potato and garlic. The only way you would know is if you try, and since it's three of you guy each should order a separate chicken dish and you guys should sample all of it.

I like lemon rice very much. Samosa's are excellent and chicken curry is very good. The person at the restaurant might recommend a house specialty or house favorite too.
If they make lemon rice then try it. You will love it

Chicken byriani is usually a good first curry, not hot.
Better still, just explain to the waiter/ess that you nothing about curries and would they please recommend something not too hot.
Having just read some suggestions. WHY are people getting thumbs down for answering honestly?

Get chicken tikka masala, plain rice and a plain or alo naan. Indian food is really good, also try tandoori chicken.

Chicken tandoori is good and not overly spicy. Or a nice curry, if you like spicier food. Don't forget the bread! They make several kinds, usually, and all are delicious and great for "sopping" up the gravies and juices.

First think again. My friend and Me went to a top rated Indian Restaurant. It was a lunch buffet. We looked at the food and at the same time said Oh My! this looks like what was thrown out in the garbage. Everything was all mixed up looking like a bunch of cassaroles from hades. We tried the food and Yes, it tasted as bad as it looked. Run to the nearest Greek restaurant if you want a good dish.

Make sure to order Naan, the traditional bread. It is very yummy. Maybe try curried chicken and rice.
