One of the best reflux medications is a drug called Nexium for Hiatus hernias etc that contribute to gastric reflux.
Only available on prescription though via GP there are many other also. ♥

It depends on the person, but I prefere Ranitidine (zantec) but this might help you more...

I am not a doctor, so either way you will want to talk to them, but this is what I have to say as a long time sufferer of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.)!

Three part answer information, what not to do, and what to do!

INFORMATION!!!!!!
I have a very severe case of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.). I have had to go to the hospital for some of the heartburn that I have had because the pain can become overwhelming or your breathing can be effected. It can be caused by Smoking, Drinking Beverages with caffeine (My case), Drinking Beverages with Alcohol, or can be Hereditary

The good thing about G.E.R.D. is that it can be a temporary thing and can be cured. It is never a permit thing even if you end up with it for the rest of your life it has the ability to be cured.

WHAT NOT TO DO!!!!!!!!
In most cases, stress is a factor to the reflux if you watch what you eat and reduce some of the stress it will help. If you watch what you eat for about a week you should find relief, if you do not then that is when you definitely what to listen to the doctor. Things to watch for are as follows:

Fatty Foods
Citrus Foods
Foods That Contain Grease
Fried Foods
Chocolate (including any Coco)
Caffeine
Smoking
Alcohol
Tomato Based Products
Lactose

WHAT TO DO!!!!
The two foods that I recommend is Black strap Molasses and Raw honey. The apple is better for night time reflux while these will work for just about all of it. What you will do is take about a tsp. of whatever one you chose. Molasses being the better because of strength and nutrition, but must be use to the taste. What the substance will do is stick to the sides of the esophagus and do two things, one is heal and the other is protect.
On the healing end, both substances have a healing property in them, and as they sit on the walls of the esophagus they will heal it. This is also helpful if you have a sore throat in the morning from refluxing.
On the protection end, both substances are high in sugar and when acid that is refluxed comes up to that the sugar will neutralize it and it will not longer be a problem at that point.

I would also look to putting Cinnamon in you diet, it has been know to help with digestion and will help you reduce the amount of acid needed to brake down food, therefore causing you to reflux less.

the best reflux medication is to get off it completely before you have both reflux and a ruined stomach.

You solve it by not eating after 7PM, and you eat small portions and about 1300 calories a day, and a vegetarian diet. No caffeine or alcohol, no things like hot peppers, hot sauces, chili, etc.. When you feel reflux coming on you sleep with the top part of your body raised by pillows (with the bottom half being lower). Sometimes it comes from the food we eat (and things we drink) but other times it comes from just a too acid stomach (put a tad of baking soda into a full glass of water and drink it). The body was meant to be more alkali. As people get older their body doesn't metabolize the food as quick as before so it sits there undigested and eventually works its way upward, so if you eat less and not before bedtime you'll give your body time to digest some of that food. Chromium picolonate makes the metabolism work faster (take the lower mg and only one pill a day if you decide to go this route). This also keeps your weight stable. Eat fewer calories if you want to lose weight, and cut out the sugar for the most part.

if all this doesn't work for you, try knight's idea and see if the opposite works.

The best are the class called PPI's, or proton pump inhibitors. The shut off the acid pumps in the stomach.
Prevacid, nexium, prilosec are a few.

Have you found a cause of your reflux?
PPI's can lead to other problems long terms, so speak to a doctor and find and treat the cause of reflux.

Have you had a EGD done (scope of the stomach)?
Tested for H. pylori?

Whats your weight situation? Over weight?

Have you been evaulated by a GI doc?

GOod luck.

Priolosec is supposed to be the best but if reflux meds do not work for you, you may have the h. pylori bacteria. I was having severe stomach pain for years and every dr tried to prescribe me all these antiacids and acid reflux med with no avail. finally one dr said that 90% of all gastrointestinal problems are caused by this bacteria and i would need to take priolosec, amoxicillin and clarithromyican for 14 days. About 10-11 days into the treatment, my stomach pain stopped and has not returned. I have been without pain for a few weeks and for the first time in years. I hope this helps. Good luck!

I read an article that said heartburn is caused from your stomach not having enough acid to break down and digest your food properly. I was having heartburn for a while all the time. I got on Prevacid and it made it worse. The article said you need to put more acid in your stomach, so I tried 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and it went away and I got off the Prevacid. I would try that.

Hi there,
Here is a natural remedy to cure your acid reflux/gerd and hearth burn http://www.goobypls.com/r/rd.asp?gid=568

Acid reflux disease, also known as gastro-esophageal reflux disease, or GERD, occurs due to the coexistence of two medical conditions. The first acid reflux disease contributing condition is a retrograde flow of stomach contents into the esophagus. However, the reflux itself does not necessarily lead to gastro-esophageal reflux disease symptoms or histologic changes, and can occur among healthy individuals as well. In this case, the process is referred to as "physiologic gastroesophageal reflux".
Cheers.

Kim, it depends on each persons health, needs, and other drugs taken. For me Nexium is best, but that's not true of everyone. Ask your doctor what is best for you, and have a test for the H.pylori bacteria, which can cause many esophageal lesions and reflux problems.
