Using condoms definitely HELPS prevent contracting a STD, but unfortunately condoms are not 100% effective, especially with STDs that can be spread by DIRECT skin to skin contact like HPV or genital herpes.
Condoms ONLY cover a man's penis and NOT his entire genital area. So, just the rubbing back and forth of the genital areas during sex or foreplay is enough to spread genital herpes. It's DIRECT skin to skin contact.
If a person is going to have sex with someone who has genital herpes there will ALWAYS be a chance they can contract the virus even if condoms are used. There are several couples out there though with one person having genital herpes and the other not. I was personally in a 4 year relationship with someone and he never got the virus from me.
Take care!

I got clinically diagnosed with the herpes simplex virus (type 2) about six years ago, when I was still attending college and had a stupid one-night stand. I just made a massive mistake that one time and suddenly I felt like I was going to have to live with the consequences for the rest of my life. The worst part was feeling I could never date guys again. In the end, who wants to go out with someone that has sores around her you-know-what? But since a friend shared this video everything changed https://tr.im/treatmentherpes2o152g5f
Not only was I able to clear away all traces of the hsv from my body in less than 21 days, but I was also able to begin dating once more. I even met the man of my dreams. This method provided me the opportunity to be happy and experience real love. Now I want to enable you too by sharing this with the whole World.

Yes, you are.
Herpes is transmitted through skin to skin contact, and outbreaks of herpes can occur over any of the area covered by a pair of boxer shorts. While men often get outbreaks on their penis, they can also often get them on the scrotum. Women most often get outbreaks on the labia and external genitals, which of course are not covered by a condom. The standard answer is condoms provide about 50% protection, but what this actually means is for a woman having sex with a man with herpes the risk is reduced by 40%. New research indicates that condoms provide virtually no protection at all for a man having sex with an infected woman, because of the lack of coverage. This is also the case with genital warts.
Herpes is not infectious all the time, mainly when outbreaks are present, but people with herpes are always infectious for some part of the time when they show no symptoms - it is known as asymptomatic shedding of the virus, and most people actually catch herpes from their partners during this phase, when they have no symptoms, because obviously attacks are easy to avoid. I caught herpes when my partner had no symptoms.
Bear in mind, if you do not get cold sores (oral herpes) you are actually just as likely to catch gential herpes through receiving unprotected oral sex - I know three people with herpes inclusing myself and we all caught herpes this way, rather than through intercourse. If this happens, the infection is usually caused by HSV-1, the oral herpes virus, rather than HSV-2, which normally causes genital herpes. Obviously oral hepres hsv-1 can be caught in either place but if you already have it orally you are unlikely to get it down below form a partner with cold sores.

I am absolutely terrified and I feel so alone. I just found out last week that I tested positive for hsv1 and 2. I have been with the same man for the past 10 years and within the last year found out that he has cheated on me with numerous women. I am so scared that I can give it to my children by kissing them and them eating with me...I feel like my whole life has changed. And even though the nurses, my doctor, and websites say that a lot of people have it I still feel like I am by myself. My self esteem has dropped and I feel like I have been used up. But now, My life is very happy.

Of course you are. You are at risk for catching any STD if you're having sex, whether you're using a condom or not. Don't forget cancerous HPV! Have fun.

a condom can reduce the risk but no guarantee.
"The textbook symptom of genital herpes is a cluster of small fluid-filled blisters that break, forming painful sores that crust and heal during several days. Affected areas include the penis, scrotum, vagina, vulva, urethra, anus, thighs, and buttocks."
