I think for me it would be Abraham Lincoln...President of the US for the Civil War - Northern side rather than the southern side that seceded from the Union, less than 100 years after the US fought the American Revolution against the British.
He officially freed the slaves...so the African-Americans...that had to fight for some semblance of equality again 100 years later. Easiest to think Martin Luther King, Jr. and others in the 1960's.
I happen to be white (European descendant that can trace back on one side to George Washington), but I've always been fascinated by the American Civil War and its issues.
I happen to have a Mary Todd Lincoln day lily in one of my gardens because I enjoy the Civil War era of history and mankind.
I wish we could all understand each other!

William Tecumpseh Sherman, I'ld hope to call him Cump. For those that don't know, he was an American civil war general. He coined the frase " war is Hell" but no one ever finishes it. The more like Hell it is, the sooner it's over.
