About 8 months ago i found out i had HPV, but about 1 month after that It was gone. I recieved the 3 treatments of the vaccine gardasil..and i just finished about 3 weeks ago. recently, i had unprotected sex (birth control) with my boyfriend of 4 years, but only for a short short time. I have never had another partner, do you think i can recieve it again? It would have most likely been from him and Is it possible to get the same strain of it again?

Wow, please ignore the guy above me.

Men and women can have the virus for many years before they ever realize they have the virus. So, is COMPLETELY possible you got it from your boyfriend, and, like you said, there is NO test for men to detect HPV. So, it's completely possible you contracted it from him, but impossible to know for sure. You may have contracted the virus from a partner you had before him. There really is no way to know for sure.

If you were able to get rid of the virus (which many women can do), it's still possible for you to contract it again. Also, the vaccine only help prevents contracting 4 different kinds of HPV; it's not a guarantee it will work.

Just stay on top of your yearly pap smears and you should be just fine! Pap smears are the best thing a woman can get to detect any abnormalities on the cervix caused by HPV, which can eventually turn into cervical cancer for some women. Good luck!

***Also, the person below is wrong about a few things. A woman with HPV CAN get Gardasil. It won't CURE a woman's HPV, but it might prevent her from getting a kind of HPV she doesn't already have. Many doctors (including mine) suggest ALL women get the new vaccine, whether they have HPV or not. The vaccine protects against 4 different kinds of HPV (two known to cause about 70% of cervical cancer and two known to cause about 90% of genital warts). Say, for example, a young girl only has one kind of HPV that the vaccine prevents. Theoretically, if she gets the vaccine, she'll be protected from contracting the other 3 kinds of HPV that the vaccine protects against.

I've had HPV for over 6 years and I'm getting the first shot of Gardasil next month.

if you had HPV before it didnt go away just the symptoms did, your boy friend DOES have it however there is no way to test for hpv unless you have symptoms and guardasil did NOT get rid of it... i'm assuming you didnt tell your doc you have hpv because he wouldnt of given you the shots! this might not be safe... with or with out a condom you can still catch hpv... weather or not you will ever have any symptoms again is unknown you should let you partner know if he doesnt already ... if you have any more questions call the center for desiese control
