Let's see if I can offer you some basics. A "normal" heart beats between 60 and 100 times a minute. Athletes, well-conditioned people can have slower rates, sometimes even close to 40. Their heart does not beat as fast, but beats more efficiently. However, a very sick heart can also beat slower than normal, AND some types of medications can also lower the rate. For example, the beat blockers used to treat high blood pressure, will lower the heart rate. Strong and fast heart beats that you can actually feel in your chest may be caused by many factors including stress, anxiety, medications. Exercise/exertion are not the only causes. Anger, for example, can produce the same effects.
Palpitations may be caused by excessive caffeine intake, heart disease, medications (including illegal drugs), stress and PVC or atrial fibrillation/flutter. These are abnormal problems in the electrical conduction of the heart. If they persist or get worse, it's a good idea to go for a check-up. Hope this helped some.

Think of it this way, your heart will one day give out when it reaches a certain number of beats. Just hypothesize please. So you dont want it to be beating to fast for no reason, or youll reach your limit to soon. Also if it is beating to hard, imagine what that is doing to your blood pressure. As a result of beating to hard, your arteries strart to tear alittle at the micro level and you start to acumilate scars on top of scars narrowing your arteries. When your arteries are narrow that furthur increases blood pressure just the way if you constrict a hose water pressure increases, but thats bad for your heart.

Poster #1 is quite correct...there is way too much information to try to give you an even remotely lucid answer. There is one thing I can tell you without reservation....heart palpitations do not happen to everyone. As this seems to be of great concern to you, do yourself a favor and see a doctor for a complete cardiac workup. At least, put your mind at ease.

Palpitations, Its awareness of the heartbeat, usually because it is abnormally strong, rapid or irregular. A brief episode of palpatations may be normal reaction to strenuous exercise, fear or excitment. Palpatations that are disturbing when you are at rest or feeling calm should be investigated, as they may be symptom of heart disease(particularly if the beat is irregular), Anaemia, Hyperthyroidism(the effects of excessive thyriod hormone) or other disease.

there are so many reasons hearts do these things....stress, disease, etc. I think you should just study up on the cardiovascular system, its too complex and too much info to write here if you really want to understand it
