how about a classy cocktail??
appetizers, wine, and a band to play!
You can always have servers to serve trays of appetizers and wine.... but also there can be trays of cigars.... (it would all depends how many people are we talking about)
a band can be very important... jazz music its so realaxing!
you guys can always decorate with white roses.... vases filled with ice and put the roses in... they are so elegant!
also, print out some black and white pictures and place picture frames all over the place .... the time him and his wife met each other, wedding day, family....etc... that would make it more personal....
and of coarse all thsi can be a formal night with delicious food as well.
Anything you decide I hope you guys have lots of fun!!!

You don't sound like real party people. Why not plan a martini lounge party idea. Party City has light up martini glasses and wine glasses. Serve heavy hors d oeuvers and play some soft background music.OR...as I would do...Have a blow out 50's themed party.Look at Party City for their decorations. Check out the sites below for more ideas. Come on...he's going to be 50!!!. Give him a party that everyone will be talking about. Rent a hall, hire a band, invite everyone he knows! Make it memorable. Serve diner food and spiked milkshake. Play 50's music. Have a hoola hoop contest, a dance contest, wear blue jeans and bobby socks.
Whoops, I reread your question again. It's too late now to give him a really good party. Look at my first suggestion. I hope it's not too late to invite anyone.

well the usual is the over the hill all black stuff for decorations. And the Nifty Nifty (name) turned 50 sign in the front yard. If this is a parent or hubby or a significant loved one take the lead and do something you know they would enjoy a great deal. If they are adventurous a white water rafting trip or a hot air baloon ride and a nice picnic sunset dinner when you return. Now that would truly mark the big fifty for me.

What was his favorite decade? You could do a 50s or 60s theme, a disco theme, whatever he enjoys...if you do a themed party and he likes vintage cars you could rent one according to the decade and have it parked out front and take pictures in it as party favors...????
Sorry I can't be more detailed...short on time, but hope this gets the wheels of your mind turning somehow!

I just had a surprise party for my mom that went really well. I would first tell you to find out or think about what your friends husband likes, and that could be the theme, if its football, music, etc, center your party around that them. since it will be a mixed crowd you can do appitizers, entrees, drinks that is pleasing to both men and women (martinis vs coronas).

How about one of those big signs in the front yard so everyone knows who's birthday it is. Or don't some people use pink flamingos for birthdays when someones turning 50?

a surprise party is always fun!
a video/slide show of all the good years of his life (including embarrassing stuff)
make him feel young and depending on yours and his character you can say....
"ha ha! your half a century" (that is a bit cruel tho)
or
"i believe life begins at 50+"
