Depends how many episodes you have in a day. if it is frequent than it's a matter of concern.
Avoid risk factors, smoking, overweight do physical, eat a fat and decrease salt diet etc.
As the causes are too many and you will have to consult your doctor.
Palpitation means to become aware of one heart beating, normally at your age it must be over 100 beats /minute (but don't take it as a parameter). EKG is the best way to diagnose palpitation, echocardiogram etc.
During menstrual cycle it is common in females.
But I think it's normal at your age.

You should see a cardiologist. I am 26 and had the same problem and an echocardiogram showed I had an atrial septal defect. The right side of my heart was enlarged and it was so big it required open heart surgery. I am not trying to scare you but don't ignore something that is wrong with your heart. The younger you are when you find a problem the better the outcome will be.

There are a lot of things that could cause palpitations -- all of which need doctor's care. One is mitral valve prolapse (other symptoms would also be headache/migraine and fatigue). It could also be a problem with your thyroid gland. Please schedule an appointment and go ASAP.
