You BP problem is not severe but do try to get the 97 down to 80. It could be hereditary, It could be that you need to watch your sodium intake. It coud be you need to lose a few pounds and get more exercise. If you continue to check it and it doesn't go down see your doctor. It can be controlled by medication.

Of course you were hypertensive in the emergency room...you had a broken hand! Hypertension is considered to be any BP reading over 140/90.

Regarding blood pressure machines in stores: these machines are not accurate; you will notice they state "not intended for diagnostic use". What makes them inaccurate? 1. You may not have the tubing over the artery in your arm due to inserting your arm incorrectly into the cuff.
2. The cuff may be too large or too small.
3. You may be moving around or talking to someone while the machine is reading your BP. Even leaning over to tell someone "I'm over here!" can affect your BP.
4. One "high" reading does not make you hypertensive. There are way, way too many factors involved in a single-time BP reading. In fact, many people have "high" BP readings at the doctor's office. This is called "white coat hypertension." You're at the doctor's office because you're sick; you're nervous, upset, and worried, and up goes your BP.

You don't mention whether you are on medications, have any health problems, or have a family history of hypertension. If any of these three are applicable, you may want to consult your physician for further evaluation.

I to went thru the same experience with the wonder and worry if my blood pressure was to high and my pressure was just about what yours only a little bit lower. So I decided it was time to go see my doctor, and she felt it be best for me to go onto high blood pressure medication, and I did, and now it never goes above 120 over 80, which in turn makes me feel better. Heres my advise to you, if you can afford it buy yourself a at home bloodpressure monitor, this is the only way to get a true reading regarding blood pressure. Make sure you take it around the same time everyday, once in the morning and again in the afternoon and then at night before bed, dont take it constantly as it will constrict your blood vessels, good luck!

I wouldn't be too worried. The pain from your broken hand could send your blood pressure through the roof, also the mere fact of being in a "Clinical setting". Get yourself a blood pressure machine, and keep a journal, morning when you arise, and evening before you go to bed.
Bring it with you to the doctors at your next appointment.

At 5'9", 197 lbs. is obese. You need to start exercising and watching your diet.
Eat whole grain breads and cereals. Cut out ice cream, soft drinks and cookies. Eat lean meats. Drink water and green tea.
Start with 10-15 min/day either walking or swimming. As you lose weight, you'll be able to go longer.
But do it soon!! The older you get, the more difficult it is to replace bad habits with good habits.
And if you won't do it for yourself, do it for the people who love you.

A responsible physician would put you on medications only after a few (3 or so) elevated bp readings. And they would have to be during a time of no stress. Pain response can definitely cause an elevation.
