My wife takes medication for high blood pressure and most of the time it is about 150 over 70. But once in a whille it shoots up to around 195 over 70 without any apparent reason. She is 80 and not in the best of health. Cam anyone explain this?

Blood pressure can fluctuate many many times throughout the day.. I would suggest though, that you guys take her blood pressure readings and write them down so that when she goes to the doctor you can let him know what is going on.. she may need to be on medication if she is not already on it, or if she is, she may need more or a different medication to control her blood pressure... good luck!

well, the systolic number (150/195 in your case) is very irregular. it can often shoot up if you're anxious, nervous, etc.

but yeah, that IS a very big jump...

just wondering, when does your wife measure her blood pressure? the BEST time to do it is FIRST THING in the morning. that's when your blood pressure is more accurate, because you usually aren't thinking of something to make you nervous.

but because your wife is 80, I'm not so sure what to say....

I'm sorry. I'm only in high school, but I did happen to have high blood pressure for a while.

good luck to both of you. sorry that i'm not much help.

Could be anything from anxiety to low blood sugar.
It's a question for her doctor.
