When I open Power Point and select "format" then "slide design," it takes more than 15 minutes for all the design options to appear. Can anyone tell me why, and how to fix that?

I haven't cleaned off the hard drive lately; but I will try that. It's not really a new thing - it's been happening for only about 3-4 months. I'll have to check on the amount of memory.

This is probably a factor of the speed of your computer, not with PowerPoint. Mine takes only a few seconds. (I do have a fast machine though with 2GB of RAM)

Try starting your computer and not having anything running. Turn off any start up scans of your antivirus programs. Wait for all disk activity to stop.

Then try opening PPT and with a new blank presentation select Format -> Slide Design.

See what happens. If it is still slow. Look at cleaning out your machine - temp files, etc. (use disk cleanup).

Is your hard disk almost full? If it has less than 10% free space this could also cause the problem.

How much RAM do you have? More is always better.

Is this something new? or has it always been slow?

Not knowing any of the particulars of your computer, I can only guess at what the problems may be. Here are the probable causes with suggestions for a fix. That is is a recently-emergent problem leads me to these three options.

1.) Insufficient ram: Run Disc-clean to remove temporary files. (After you do this, run a De-frag just as a matter of course.) Adding ram is always a good thing in any case.
2.) Too much running in the background: Turn off as much as you can in your "Run at startup" menu.
3.) Insufficient storage: If option #1 doesn't result in a significant increase in performance, look at your available drive-space. If you have less than 15%, eliminate unused/little-used files by transfering them to storage media and deleting them drom your hard-drive.
good luck
