Chicken soup and any hot broth is great for loosing up congestion, which usually triggers coughs. Airborne isn't homemade, but the principle is....take a lot of vitamins and fluids especially as you start getting a cold. And make sure not to skip on sleep...which is really the best mechanism for getting your body to fight off the cold.
Again, not a home cure, but practically one because of it age and durability...Vicks Vapor Run was a fantastic remedy when I was small boy, partly because my Mom (bless her heart) used to rub it on my chest. If you have a loved one, the same technique can sure make you feel better....8-)

Mix honey with some lemon juice! Where do you think the idea came from for honey and lemon flavored cough drops? Way, way back in the day, this is what they used. No special measurements, just take some honey, pour in some lemon juice, shake well to mix, and store in the fridge. You can take this by the spoonful, or mix it up in hot tea. Hot tea is great when you have a cold! My mom always gave it to me.
Plus Vicks Vaporub on the chest. A vaporizor, or sitting over a pan of steaming water (carefully!), will help break up congestion, too.
Don't give honey to babies, very young children, or people who are allergic to bees. That can be very dangerous!
I find loading up on zinc tablets and vitamin C to be practically a cure. It'll knock out a cold in just a day or two, if you start it soon enough!
Good luck!

Take 2 shots of 151 rum, wrap up in a blanket, and take a nap. this isn't a joke, it actually works. the heat in your chest combined with the blanket helps loosen up whatever blockage is causing the cough. Also, the alcohol sorta dulls the reaction, which is really all a cough is. Of course I only reccomend this if you're over 21. Otherwise, try Vics shower vapor tabs, they"re magic.

Slice an onion into a jar that has a lid. Cover it with sugar and do up the lid. Put it in the fridge over night and in the morning you will have an oniony syrup. Take a spoonful each time your throat is tickly. It doesn't taste as bad as you imagine!

You can also buy a bottle of eucalyptus at your local health food store for aromatherapy. Put a few drops of it into some steaming water and hold your head above it and inhale. It's pretty strong stuff.
