since you got a big backyard...maybe you could turn off all the exterior lighting. then put several orange lanterns on the path walk.... simple, yet elegant. if you could find pumpkin shape basket that was use by kids for collecting treats. that will make a good lantern.
in one of the windows looking over the front yard, why not make a cardboard human figure, place it on the window like over looking the yard with the light on its back.... scary...
inside the house, since your party is for pre-teens, add dark orange and purple motif to your traditional black haunted.
party games that can create bonding will be good for these kids. try the web for help on games. some are listed below.
Goodluck!

We do the same in our home. First you will need to start shopping now for every scary thing to can find in the store. After this year go and buy as much as you can for next season. Use the black plastic it is called bisquine to mark off different sections. you can make framed areas to make it look like a haunted maze. Enlist the help of drama students that would like to be part of dressing up and making a successful fun place for the kids. Be sure to have a huge amount of screaming ghouls and the fog machine and music adds to it. Make sure you have a large amount of candy on hand. Go to oriental trading post on line and order bags of bloody eye balls and fingers and such to pass out. The also have decorations and are very cheap. Have a great time and make sure that walk ways are well lit on the ground and that no one gets hurts because there are those ghouls out there that will sue if their little one trips and falls. Happy haunting.

Invite a group of college kids to have an unsupervised party at your house the night before the pre-teen party. By the time they are done, I assure you they will have "decorated" the house for you and it will look pretty damn scary.

-Light bulbs; Replace some with black bulbs and some with green bulbs (from hardware store), makes things eerie and spookie.
-Apple Bobbing with severed hands; get some disposable latex gloves. Fill with water, tie off tops, put in freezer. When ready to use, dip in hot water, remove gloves. Put "dead hands" in the tub with the apples and water.
-Strobe lights; buy a couple of these and put one on the front of the house and one in the back. These make everything very eerie, like it's moving in slow motion. Totally cool!
-Dry Ice; put some in the bottom of a large vat or barrell, the mist that comes out is spookie.
-Hang a 'dead man' from a tree. Make out of stuffed pillowcases, old clothes, and a rope.
-Definitely get a CD of spooky Halloween music!
