The most common adverse reactions is headache. The less common adverse reactions are dizziness, peripheral neuropathy, insomnia, blurred vision, constipation, diarrhea, upset stomach, gas, abdominal pain or cramps, heartburn, vomiting, muscle cramps, myalgia, myositis, rash, itching and alopecia. The life-threatening adverse reaction is rhabdomyolysis.
Because lovastatin (Mevacor) can elevate ALT, AST and CK levels, baseline liver function is usually done before starting the med and at 6 and 12 weeks (approximately) after starting the drug and when the dosage has been increased. LFTs (liver function tests) are also done periodically to monitor liver function.
