I am looking for a recommendation on a good book that teaches basic knot tying that would be used on a high ropes course (I am training to facilitate groups). I am more of a visual hands on learner and have learned the basics from some people (e.g. figure 8 knots, bowland, etc) but would like to have something to refer to should I forget. Thanks.

Freedom of the Hills - the bible of climbing. It has many, many knots and how to tie them (including the bowline).

Try "The Morrow Guide to Knots". It is the best knot book I've ever found. It uses some European names for the knots as opposed to American names, but it has step by step full color photos.

If you are training for a Ropes Course Instructor position you only need to know the following knots:

Figure 8 on a Bight
Water Knot
Clove Hitch
Lark's Head
Bowline (maybe)

I've instructed Challenge Courses and Climbing on-and-off for 10 years. With the exception of times when we were building things or doing repairs I can't ever recall using any knots other than those I listed.

I concur about Morrow's guide to knots. I found it pretty good. Also, I found a few couple sites that had videos/animations that made things really clear for me.

Best way to remember of course is to practice. :)
