Nickel, why are the crystal clear "jewel boxes" so important to CDs? Why can't they be solid with the paper label on the outside, like DVD boxes? Seems like some are even made of cardboard, which could be made from recycled paper.

Of course, they can be made and are made. Sometimes, difficult to detect, though.

In theory

All of them are made out of PC (Polycarbonate) which is a patent owned by one single company.
Several attempts have been made unsuccessfully to find a replacement material.

PC is a thermoplastic which means it can be melted and then reused (if pure enough). In this case, the optical qualities are very important and recycled material might not be sufficient.

not as far as i know. Whilst we are on the subject of recycling i know the address of a place in the UK where u can recycle DVDs and CDs.
