The kind of tent you need to buy depends on what kind of camping you will be doing. I have 3 different tents that I use for different occasions. I use a single man ultra light tent for backcountry trips when I need to carry the tent on my back. It is a Sierra Designs and it is amazing. Ultra tough and seriously light - it is called the Light Year. It is my favorite tent I own. The next tent I have is by Eureka and it is a 2 man tent with a bit extra room for gear inside. It is really really light as well especially for a 2 man. It is called the Spitfire 2. The third I have is for family camp trips. It is a 3 room tent by Coleman. I am not really crazy about it actually. It is big which is always a bonus for family trips, but it is tough to put together and the features aren't really engineered the way they should be. Just not quite enough thought went into it. My wife and I got it for a wedding gift actually.
If it was up to me I would buy either a Sierra Designs, The North Face, Kelty, Marmot, or a Eureka. All of those brands are amazing and really really well engineered. If you are on a serious budget then check out Alps. They make a great product for a really great price. Anyway, if you are only looking for a drive up campsite tent then Coleman will get you buy, but it sounds like you need a tent that will stand up to some harsh conditions, wind, rain, etc... don't go cheap on quality. If you have an REI near where you live, go in and talk to the experts there to determine exactly what will suit you. Here are the links to the manufacturers I mentioned.

relies upon on while you're tenting, or backpacking. while you're backpacking weight turns right into a key situation in tent determination. you will sacrifice convenience and useful properties for a lighter tent. The tents tend to be smaller. while you're tenting of the lower back of a vehicle, then weight isn't a situation. merely %. a tent this is gigantic sufficient for the style of persons snoozing in it, as properly as in spite of kit you pick for to stow in it. while you're an occasional camper, there is extremely no would desire to spend a ton of money on a tent. The Coleman or Ozark path make decrease priced tents that are sturdy for 3 season tenting. maximum severely, spring for a footprint. that's a tarp or plastic shrink sligthly smaller than the floor of the tent. Protects your floor, and makes it much less possibly which you will awaken in a puddle. A 2d great tarp is reachable in case you detect out your tent has a leak. merely rig it on genuine your tent like a secondary rain fly.

There is good info at www.rei.com. REI is a not-for-profit and the outdoor advisors will help you whether you are a member or not. Keep in mind that "sleeps 3" means just that, not 3 people enjoying snacks and a card game, but 3 people laying very close to each other. If you want room to stretch out and relax, increase tent capacity by a factor of 1.5 to 2.

REI makes great tents. after doing lots of research and taking many in the field the best tent I have found for family tenting is the Base Camp. Other tents they make are great for year round and ultra light. All their tents are backed by a life time guarantee.

I've been wilderness camping for 30 years, and have tried many different tents. They all leaked, in bad enough weather. I finally had a revelation. A tent won't leak, IF it never gets wet. We use a LARGE tarp, over the entire camp site. Never had a problem since. Of course, we camp in the wilderness, so can use all the space we want. I use any cheap dome tent, and set it up under the tarp.

Being an Eagle Scout and Scout Master for 5 years. Several High Adventure trips.I would say Eureka. They are not cheap. But if you are looking for one to hold up, light weight, and do the job. Noting better.
