Tempeh is an Indonesian food product made of fermented soybeans. It's got a nutty, chewy texture, but not loads of flavor. It's often mixed with other grains and formed into cakes. I'm also too lazy to soak or simmer it before using it. But you can marinate it to soften the texture.

You can also use tempeh in place of ground beef in chili or spaghetti sauce. Just crumble the cake into the mixture.

I love tempeh--like tofu, it takes practice to cook right, but once you get the hang of it, it's fab.

Tempeh is actually fermented soybeans. It is wrapped in banana or nipah leaves. Unlike beancurd or tofu where you can't see the soybeans as it has already been grinded, the soybeans is visible in tempeh. As for the taste, it all depends on individual. As for me, i prefer tofu than tempeh. U can eat tempeh in its raw form or fry it. It has been proven by researchers that tempeh is a good source of protein and can hinder certain sickness.

empeh/Tempe is made by a natural culturing and controlled fermentation process that binds soybean particles into a cake form. It originated from Indonesia, invented by the Javanese, where it is most popular, although it is common in other parts of Southeast Asia as well, introduced by migrated Javanese. It is especially popular on the island of Java, where it is a staple source of protein. Like tofu, tempeh is made from soybeans, but tempeh is a whole soybean product with different nutritional characteristics and textural qualities. Tempeh's fermentation process and its retention of the whole bean give it a higher content of protein, dietary fiber and vitamins compared to tofu, as well as firmer texture and stronger flavor. Tofu, however, has a higher concentration of protein per carbohydrates, and is thought to be more versatile in dishes. In the kitchen, tempeh is often prepared by cutting it into pieces, soaking in brine or salty sauce, and then frying. Cooked tempeh can be eaten alone, or used in chili, stir frys, soups, salads, sandwiches, and stews. Recent popular vegan cookbooks, such as Isa Chandra Moskowitz's "Vegan with a Vengeance", have come up with more creative ways of cooking tempeh, using it as a vegetarian substitution for breakfast meats, such as sausage and bacon. Tempeh has a complex flavor that has been described as nutty, meaty, and mushroom-like. Tempeh freezes well, and is now commonly available in many western supermarkets as well as in ethnic markets and health food stores. Tempeh performs well in a cheese grater, after which it may be used in the place of ground beef (as in tacos). When thin sliced and deep fried in oil, tempeh obtains a crispy golden crust while maintaining a soft interior - its sponge-like consistency make it an excellent base for all marinades. Dried tempeh (whether cooked or raw) provides an excellent stew base for backpackers....

I don't care for it. It's got a weird texture. Everyone has different likes though so it wont hurt to try it.

i eat that thing at least 3 times a week. since i live in jakarta and all. it has unique taste, but it's really tastyand contain a lot of nutrients too. u should try it sometimes.

tempeh was made by a soya bean. tempeh by it self got no taste. you must cook it. Tempeh is a traditional Java food.

I posted this question a few days ago! I tried every herb and spice I had, it still tasted gross, I ended up holding my nose to eat the bit I had cooked and threw the rest away.
