Are you asking why people are vegetarian or why people who are vegetarian go vegan?

You've had answers to why people go vegetarian, but some people take an extra few steps and go vegan because milk and eggs are incredibly cruel.

Cows are kept constantly pregnant (how else do female mammals produce milk--they have to be pregnant), and their babies are taken away shortly after birth. Male calves become veal, while female calves usually join mom on the dairy line.

Hens are crammed in cages (check www.cok.net) with not enough space to even move. Male baby layer chicks are killed at birth because they don't lay eggs (natch), and they don't grow big enough fast enough to be raised for their flesh.

Both types of animals are killed when their production wanes. Dairy cows probably wind up as hamburger. The flesh of egg-laying hens is so battered that it can't be used for anything more than nuggets, low-rent pot-pies and the like.

Silk, wool, leather, and fur all involve cruelty. Bee products cause harm to bees; no wonder they're disappearing!

While 99 percent of animal exploitation is in the food industry, vegans strive to avoid all animal exploitation.

Lots of reasons. I started in college after taking a nutrition class and reading "Diet for a small planet". I realized that a vegetarian or vegan diet is much more sustainable for the planet and that the grain used in raising just one cow could feed many, many more people than the cow's meat could.

I later learned that meat is oversold (like milk) by the companies that produce it. Your body doesn't need that much protein, and it certainly doesn't need the fat. I also feel much heavier (like weighed down) when I eat meat or drink milk now (which I do on occasion)

Vegan is one step "stricter" than vegetarianism and eliminates ALL animal-derived products (even eggs, cheese, etc.) from the diet.

The key reason for me is that I believe that the body will have the most energy by eating the "best" calories, i.e. those foods that give maximum nutrition for minimum cost (digestion effort, fat, chemicals, etc) and meat is definitely not at the top of that list.

Neither do I. I mean I understand the ethical principlet, but often it is so black and whtite that it reveals someone who really is a bit screwed up. Instead their time is consumed by an almost obsession about diet, nutrition, food foraging, etc., etc. Usually they are not what I would call "holistic" thinkers, i.e., making connection between various aspects of what "ethical" is, what "human" is, and what are the gray areas of life.

They are quite single-minded, and I truly believe the fanaticism is fueled by an improper and "unnatural" diet. Other cultures that one could be considered "vegetarian", sometimes because of religious beliefs, have centuries of traditions and knowledge that sustain them rather than these "fad" seeking quasi-vegetegarians and vegans we find in this country and Western Europe.

There are five basic reasons:

1) They find eating other animals physically disgusting.
2) They find eating other animals to be morally wrong.
3) They belong to a religion or cultural group that does not approve of eating meat.
4) For their own health.
5) For the health of the planet. Producing a pound of grain or vegetables uses much less water and other natural resources than producing a pound of meat.

Personally, I'm an opportunivore. I'll eat what I have the opportunity to eat, but #5 is a strong reason that causes me a twinge of guilt from time to time.

I am not a vegetarian though some ppl might call me a "Victorian Beckam" vegetarian who eats veggies, fruits, chicken and fish.haha I do try to work in some vegetarian meals including vegan meals NOT for political reasons but because I want to maintain some semblence of a normal weight and fruits, veggies and grains have fewer calories than t-bone steaks.

There are several reasons people choose to be vegetarians. Here are some:

1. They are grossed out by meat... just like people are grossed out by certain other foods, like broccoli or brussel sprouts. Everyone is entitled to dislike certain foods.

2. Religious reasons. Some religions consider animals sacred and eating them is discouraged or forbidden.

3. Animal rights. The way food is produced these days, animals go through a great deal of suffering to get to our plates. Many people believe that by eating these animals they are supporting animal cruelty.

4. Health reasons. The diets of vegetarians are significantly lower in saturated fat and cholesterol which could lead to heart disease and other health problems.

I didn't understand what your question was thouroughly asking.. So I'll give two answers. [:

People are vegetarians: Because we don't agree with the way animals on our beloved planet are being treated, just to satisfy the human tastebud.

People who are Vegetarians, who go Vegan:

Maybe
1) They were aiming at going Vegan, But wanted to start off as Vegetarian?

2) Are unsatisfied with being Vegetarian, and decided that being COMPLETELY animal-free was the choice for them

Some people believe that by eating animals you are accepting the right to kill animals - they are completely against it. This also relates to religions such as Islam where they are brought up not to eat meat for the same reasons.

I however, do not agree with it for we originated as creatures made to eat meat - other animals are carnivores, why shouldn't we be?

people are vegatarians because it could be part of their culture. But other than that, people believes that killing animal is wrong. So they eat vegtables instead of meat. But other people belives that eating meat and killing animals is part of life and nature. None of these eating habits are wrong.
