Blood thinners are usually the culprits for spontaneous bleeds. Sometimes anti hypertension meds can cause an increased risk of bleeding due to the dilation of blood vessels, but normally doesn't cause bleeding by itself.

If he is taking a blood thinner like Coumadin, it could be causing the bleeding. His doctor should be notified that he is having spontaneous nosebleeds.
