I'm primarily a vegan, but sometimes I do have dairy products, but not in large amounts. Yesterday at a friend's house, he made an orange milk shake, with lots of vanilla ice cream. Today I feel awful, and I'm wondering if it's possible that the milk isn't agreeing with my system since I haven't had a large quantitiy since I became vegan.

wait, what? how can you possibly be a vegan and still consume dairy?

::Edit:: beebs: are you serious? he DID call himself a vegan (take a look at his last sentence). why label yourself something you're not? I'm not telling him not to consume milk, I'm simply telling him that he isn't a vegan if he does drink milk. he can eat whatever he wants as long as he doesn't call himself a vegan (if he drinks milk). perhaps he should check for himself what veganism is all about because he clearly doesn't know.
just like some people call themselves vegetarian and still eat fish, now those are the ones who are uninformed, not someone who is telling the truth.
you're basically telling him it's OK to use that term even he's not vegan, which is kind of ridiculous.

Please ignore the answers from the obviously uninformed. Yes, your body can lose the ability to digest milk proteins (lactose) if you don't consume it regularly. No, you won't die from raw milk, although you didn't even say it was raw, and since your friend used ice cream, thats highly doubtful anyway. Commercial ice creams often contain gelatine, which is made from the boiled skins, bones, ligaments and tendons of slaughtered pigs and cows-most likely, you are reacting to the combination of animal proteins your body is no longer familiar with. I suggest you drink a little baking soda disolved in warm water to ease your digestion. In the future, if you have commercial milk products, take a lactaid supplement from the pharmacy to help you digest it. As for raw milk, it contains all of the enzymes necessary to digest itself, and is well tolerated by even lactose intolerant and milk allergic individuals. I am highly allergic to commercial milk and dairy, but do just fine on raw, organic milk straight from my cow. Its a pity that so many uninformed people answer questions they know nothing about. As for your vegan status-again-ignore the zeolots who insist you are NOT a vegan if you occaisionally consume dairy. Diet choices are personal, and if you want to enjoy something once in awhile that you dont normally have, then by all means. Its no one elses concern what or how you eat. Thats the equivilant of saying if you miss a day of work, you are unemployed. Too silly.

Sounds like you very well could be Lactose Intollerant...either that or it was the vanilla.

When an adult human goes of dairy, their bodies tend to become unable to process it at all.

EDIT:
Ignore the person claiming you can die from milk...you can die from drinking RAW milk (which is a VERY rare occurance, but it can happen). Pasturised milk is safe, as long as you keep it refrigerated and finish it before the best before date.

hi - such an easy thing to find out
leave the stuff alone for 7 - 14 days at least and see how you feel
then have 7 days of eating the stuff & see if you feel worse.

this works with many things in our diets and much cheaper than expensive food intolerance tests.

However I would warn you that some people find giving up dairy one of the hardest things to do as it contains morphine - 20 times the level of human milk.
this can cause a detox in some people.

personally once I learnt that cows went through hell & that its so bad for humans - I never wanted to touch the puss laden stuff again

many illnesses clear up once dairy is removed from our systems as we dont need animal hormones, herbicides, pesticides, added growth hormones, antibiotics & other nasty chemical mixes that are used to fatten the poor animal up

You aren't a vegan if you have dairy products. Shame, no wonder you are getting sick. The vegan god is punishing you for cheating --- and you know what a cheating vegan is don't you? A "CHEGAN".

I don't think milk is to blame - unless your system really truly has become unaccustomed to it. (which is doubtful) was the ice cream spoiled, or old? or the orange juice? (orange milk shake? eeew, I'm picturing curdles....) :) Look at everything you ate and see if there's a possibility of food poisoning from old things, if not then check who you hung out with, is anyone sick? You could have caught a bug.
Hope you feel better!

I applaud Beeps!! The enzymes in raw dairy do make it easier for the human GI tract to deal with.

And I agree with her comparison of missing a day of work to having an animal product now and again if the person wishes it so.

I just couldn't have said it better myself!

Your body should not have reacted at all if your giving yourself all the vitamins you need.

I weight lift and sometimes when I diet before competition for two weeks I stay away from sugar.
After competition I eat all I want including a milk shake and Apple Pie and get high as hell because my body is getting lots of sugar that was denied.
So maybe it is just a reaction and you will be alright. That shake did sound delicious.

There are people who have an intolerance to milk.
Yes, it could be the cause. Stay away from milk and see what happens.

If you are a young person, you might consider a Vitamin c supplement.
Ask a pharmacist.

Dairy products are the hardest for a body to digest. Since your body is not used to it it is possible that it isn't agreeing with you. I am not a vegan and have a hard time drinking milk sometimes.
