1. Keep the guest list manageable. Don't invite more people than you have seating for because no one like to eat with a plate of food balanced on their lap.

2. Stick with something that you know how to make and is a crowd pleaser. Pasta and salad is my standby.

3. You can get away with store bought stuff as long as your present it well. Most people won't know the difference. Check out this website for ideas.

4. A few nice touches around the house will make people feel like you put a lot of effort in to it. Put a candle and fresh towels in the bathroom. Make a centerpiece out of a cool bowl and some in-season fruit or a grouping of various sized white candles. Put a bowl of nuts or candy on the coffee table.

5. Do as much as possible before the party because no one else will be relaxed and have fun if you are not. So HAVE FUN!

Number one important thing; do as much as possible ahead of time, keep it simple and relax. A frantic hostess makes your guests uncomfortable.
Make only ONE fancy dish and never try anything you haven't already perfected.

What do you have in mind? Casual, formal, or dressy casual?
