I have two daughters, 2 mon. and 20 mon. My older daughter likes to dance and swim, so I enrolled her ballett and swimming. She loved both classes and the instructors were nice in both classes expecially in swimming.

My daughter recently got tubes put in her ears and needs to have theese special ear plugs in her ears when she goes swimming and is very allergic to strawberries. Well when I told the swimming instructor since they give out snacks after lessons what she was allergic to and told her about the ear plugs, she nodded.

I come back to her swimming lesson to pick her up and I see my daughter eating strawberries! I grabbed her hand, made her spit out the strawberry she had in her mouth and marched up to the instructor. I said "Why was Lily eating strawberries!! I told you she was highly allergic."

The instructor's response? "Oh you were just making that up."

MAKING IT UP??? I was not! Luckily she has no deadly reaction BUT her ears hurt. She said they took out her

Also, I told her that she should never eat strawberries and that if someone takes her ear plugs to not go in the pool without them.

No this is very serious with my daughter's ears. I took her to 3 doctors to get opions because she had trouble hearing and they alll said the same thing: "Lily's ears have a bunch of gunk and fluid in them. I suggest you get tubes."

Jude, the ear problem will not be sorted out until her tubes fall out on their own in a few years.

I would not go back to the instructor if she can't follow simple request. That could have been a life or death situation. As for the tubes in your daughters ears... I had tubes put in my ears all the way from 2 up til i was 10. That is when my parents took me to another doctor. I had my tonsils removed and never had ear problems again. I would recommend getting a second opinion on your daughters condition. It never hurts to get a second opinion.

my little brother suffered horribly growing up with painful ear infections. he was in the er in the middle of the night, often. He had 2 separate ear surgeries. Eventually he had tubes put in, had to use special drops, and had to wear plugs while swimming. In your case, it sounds as if you were at a facility that didn't listen to parenting concerns. Let me assure you that this is not widely practiced. In fact we were able to find excellent places where the teachers were very involved in the swimmers health. This is most important after all. Change swimming facilities., but don't take this enjoyment away from your child.
As for your food allergy- did you ask the doctor if the ear problems and food allergy could be related. This leads into why my brother had horrible ear problems. After several years of pain as a child, an allergy test reveled he was allergic to chocolate. Once eliminating the allergen, the ear problem was eliminated as well. Check on this. hope this does some good.

Wow. It's good that you got your daughter out of that. She could have been badly injured!

Yeah, my sister has tubes in her ears and needs ear plugs to swim. I suggest maybe contacting the groups "boss" - for instance, if it's at the YMCA then call the manager or whatever they're called. That's really not safe. My stepdad would have sued them.

I just reread it to see what I missed answering and I think it's just ridiculous that they took out her plugs to go swimming after you SPECIFICALLY SAID that she needed it! Yeah, definitely go and tell someone about that - they could be doing stuff like that to other kids.

Change swimming school. Personally I would not let her swim until the ear problem is sorted. her ears are more important than swimming at this time.
