I just found out that the local organic farmer I buy my vegetables from has been using cow manure to fertilize his vegetables. I have been consuming vegetables that have been fertilized by an animal... How wrong is this? Should I approach him about this? I feel betrayed.

I would picket outside his house.

And don't forget to report him to Yahoo

That just about covers the 2 Ashley responses.

You have put yourself in the meat-industry chain and are no longer a vegan. By buying those vegetables you have supported the slaughter of those poor innocent cows.

Cow manure is the best fertilizer on the planet it is 100% organic and it is used by every organic farmer because it is high in the nutrients that plants need. It also puts to good use something that might otherwise be discarded. And no parts of the cow are used up when producing it. It is earth friendly. Enjoy your salads and veggies.

Well, the old story goes that Native Americans used dead fish to fertilize their corn, and they're OK with it.

Vegetables aren't big fans of cow manure, either--for the most part, it's just waste. But there are nutrients in there nonetheless, and when they react with the soil, the plants suck out the good parts through their roots and leave the bad. Unless your broccoli smells like cow manure, I wouldn't be worried.

To be frank, the cow is going to poop regardless of whether or not the manure is used for fertilizer. There is nothing wrong about using the manure to fertilize - If you purchase soil at the nursery, where do you think it came from?

Cow, or steer, manure is a typical fertilizer and should be just fine. I fertilize my plants with steer manure and love the outcome! Doesn't mean that it's not "organic", in fact, how organic can you get?

Organic by definition and by regulated standards CANNOT use a chemical fertilizer. So if the farmer wants to fertilize, and he does need to, he must use manure.

Were you aware that most vegetable and fruit crops are pollinated by hives of bees put there by honey farmers?

Ok you need help. You are worried about manure???? How else are you going to FERTERLIZE the vgtables??? I have been a vegatarian for fifteen years. I understand about being organic and having concern for animals but you have gone a little too far. Manure is as natural as you can get. Would you rather use chemical ferterlizer???

Calm down, seek professional help, eat a carrot.

using cow manure as a fertilizer is in no way wrong. remember, conventional produce growers can by law use straight up raw sewage as fertilizer. which do you prefer?

my dad often throws his old eggshells on his garden to compost and use as fertilizer (along with coffee grounds and other vegetable/fruit matter) and i dont hesitate to steal zucchinis and tomatoes from him.

I agree with JennyP. There is nothing wrong or not organic about using manure. Plus the cow was not hurt in any way with using this reliable process. Don't beat yourself up about this.

LMAO, that's the best yet!!!!!!!!!

I would not take this up with the farmer but go directly to the cow with a rather large cork and stuff it up the cow's dairy air, darn this cow for allowing this farmer to use it's pooh in a natural organic way...
