Are the lids made from unrecyclable plastic or is it something to do with the fact that they can be squashed down to a smaller size when transported with out them on? I never know whetether I can stick them in the recycling bin seperately or if they have to go in the trash.

Funny, I have no clue, but my first thought was that because they will be melted down, as the air heats up on the inside they could explode.

but the Christchurch City's websight had this to say:

'Why Although they may look the same, some lids are made from a different grade of plastic to that of their containers. If different grades of plastic are mixed in the recycling process that batch can be ruined and will need to be dumped.'

Suggest you move to America - you don't have to here! Some people actually get away with putting plastic other than No.1 and No.2 in the recycle bins clearly marked, "Only No.1 and No.2 Plastic!" I guess we need "Plastic Police" as well as "Thought Police"!

Please ignore the answers by asgapollo and tterb. They don't know what they're talking about.

Different cities/counties are able to recycle different kinds of plastic. Where I live, they only recycle #1 & 2. Usually the caps don't even have a number, which means they can't be recycled. They should go in the trash.

(Check the bottoms of the bottles or containers for the number.)

The lids are made from a different type of plastic than the bottle. They are both recyclable, but they are just different types of plastic.

take tops off and recycle them.
have you ever tried squashing a plastic bottle with the top on?
I went over it with my truck and it wouldnt budge!
Imagine having millions of them to deal with, the trucks would carry 1% of what they could carry.

Plastic bottles were originally designed by a French person. And we know that some of them like to have fun and go topless. Thus, an urban myth begins. And Evian is naive spelt backwards. Isn't that very French.

Au revoir.

the reality is, with the lid on, what is inside has more of a chance to go septic or rancid.
