What are some effective ways to quit smoking?

While there is no one best way to quit smoking, you will be most successful if you are aware of the challenges ahead, find support, and prepare a plan to keep you on track. Here are some basic steps to quitting:

S = Set a quit date.
T = Tell family, friends, and co-workers that you plan to quit.
A = Anticipate and plan for the challenges you'll face while quitting.
R = Remove cigarettes and other tobacco products from your home, car, and work.
T = Talk to your doctor about getting help to quit.

Be realistic. Quitting is not an easy undertaking. It requires effort, determination and commitment.
-Accept the fact that you need to quit. Do not deny the
adverse health effects that you are unnecessarily putting yourself (and those around you) through.
-Be prepared for anxious and resistant feelings. Since nicotine is habit-forming, just thinking about quitting may make you feel anxious – this is quite common. Give yourself a specified amount of time to identify and move beyond these feelings.
-Take quitting one day at a time, even one minute at a time—whatever you need to succeed and find support!
-Develop a quit plan that works best for your needs.
-Talk to your doctor or health professional to help develop a plan.
-Enlist the help of family and friends by telling them about your plans.
-Ask others who have quit how they handled withdrawal symptoms – both psychological and physical.
-Learn new behaviors.
-If you’ve tried quitting before, identify what did and didn’t work for you. Build on your strengths and discover new techniques.-

Well I had been smoking for 35 years and I am trying to quit. Cold turkey didn't work. I have to say I haven't bought any cigarettes since April. I started puffing around on cigars and now I am ready to get rid of them. I have had several friends that has quit using a new drug they came out with here lately. All of them reported the same results after about a week you do not want anything to smoke. Some did report nightmares when taking the drug. I guess that will be my next step if I have any problem quitting the cigars. Good luck.

Old- Cure- Get into hot tub water and stay for three days, drinking water all day long- Get out only to go to bathroom or when faint-feeling, to wrap a cold wet towel around your head- this leaches' out the nicotine out of your kidneys which gives the craving.
Don't buy them.
God says any man, when praying- if he is saying one thing and doing another can't expect an answer to his prayer or a break-through- He is double-minded and unstable in all his ways- God will know that you mean business if you never buy them again- He can then give you the strength to overcome this-
Keep one in pocket, and pick it up sometimes, and say I'm bigger than you!
Keep trying
Just wait one minute- then wait just one more minute-
Only smoke one for first two weeks while quitting, in the morning-(the rest aren't as good, anyway) { One cigarette is still so unhealthy}
You may gain weight, so watch food portions. You will not be so ill, so that's a good thing.

Stop buying cigarettes. If you've got the will then that's the way.
If will needs a aid patches or gum can help, but don't smoke as well otherwise you're even worst off

Some people say that you have to "will" your self to stop smoking in order to stop smoking but I'm not sure if that's true.

This really is the wrong forum for that question. Ignore the first answer that is really stupid.

There should be an agency in your country that will provide you with support for overcoming your addiction please contact them and don't listen to the idiots on here. You should be able to find them by typing something like "quit smoking" +"x" ( x being whatever country you are in).

apart from the money you will save, and the people that will be happy around you no to be smoked upon, you will actually live beyond 60. if you want to stop you will but it takes commitment and willpower to beat the habit. my wife smoked. she died at 62 from emphysema, a terrible disease and way to die. I can promise you that you should stop asap.
good luck and use your inner strength
