Should we eat onions and things like onions (garlic, scallions, leeks, etc). I was told they are irritants. This is a very serious question as I really want to know the answer to this question. If you know the answer, then great. If not, then please don't respond with a negative remark. I am really looking forward to getting some good well thought out responses. No hatemonger responses please.

LOL, I am wasting my time here asking you people anything. You people just believe anything old thing your told. I have just completed some extensive research and onions are definitely and irritant. I bet you people had no idea that garlic and onions are toxic to dogs, cats, and other animals (humans). Onions and garlic contain the toxic ingredient thiosulphate. Please do your research before you reply to my questions. That is why I said this was a serious question. I was actually looking for answer from educated people.

I'll bet you didn't know that onions are high in potassium. Garlic is a cleanser, it flushes bad things out of your body. Recent studies show that onions can help with cancer treatment.

Onions and garlic etc have been eaten for centuries by humans with no ill effect and occasionally given to animals for medicinal purposes.
As I understand it, the allium family, in particular, garlic, have become victims of mass hysteria and I could find no real scientific evidence, only speculation, that there can be serious adverse reactions in certain animals.
This could have something to do with people trying to humanise their animal companions, forgetting that many animals, dogs and cats included, are primarily carnivores. These animals have a different digestive system to humans and there are certain things they cannot tolerate. Chocolate and grapes among them apparently .
Humans seem to have an uncanny knack of overdosing when told something is 'good for them'. Too much of a good thing can end up being bad, and may not be at all appropriate for some animals.
Unless there is a medical reason for not doing so, humans can safely eat onions, garlic, leeks etc. just be sensible, ensuring the diet is as varied as possible.

Honestly so what?
I eat onions, i eat garlic, chillies, ginger... etc etc i eat rich foods all the time and i still feel great, in fact i feel even better the next day after having really mixed and flavourfull foods.
you ask these questions all the time, is this an irritant is that an irritant...
onions may be an 'irritant' but so would pepper be.. i mean even salt... or what about spices? curry.. coriander.. oregano.. and what about chillies and ginger? i mean chocolate and tea are probably irritants too, they are at least stimulants which is probably beyond an irritant.
hell the irritant properties of both garlic and onions are useful to humans, they are great at helping to keep the ear nose and throat clear.
the irritating or stimulating properties of the ephedra plant have been used for years in cold and flu tablets to help us burn through colds...
There have been studies done long ago on cats and mice and their diets, its proven that when animals are fed only on a single food source that there is eventually higher instances of skin conditions and degenerative diseases among many other ill health symptoms, that rise in incidence with every subsequent generation. untill the animals actually have trouble reproducing, once back on a standard balanced and varied diet the animals usually recover within a few generations.
variety literally is the spice of life.
eating a variety of foods is what keeps our digestive and immune system challenged, its like exercise. its the same with microorganisms, the more we come into contact with the stronger our system gets after defeating them.
dont you find that foods with various spices and flavors are more satisfying than bland and colourless food? the body knows what it wants... its not just because they have an interesting flavour.

Jainists and some other sects, including the Hare Krishnas, avoid onions, garlic, ginger and potatoes for religious reasons. Temple Buddhist cooking often excludes the onions and garlic because they supposed to arouse the passions, but the bulb and root vegetables are avoided by the Jains because harvesting requires killing the plant. For example in Hare Krishna cooking there are absolutely no recipes with onions or onion family vegetables in them. Some people dont like them for the taste or the sulphur content. onions, garlic and leaks are all very good for you however probably because of the sulphur content. They can irritate the stomaches of small children and the frail elderly but then most people can have issues with very strong tasting vegetables bd spices.

Yes it would be irritant if you eat tons of them everyday or allergic to it. Always belief in balance and not overdo it, in this case onions, then you can benefit from the health side. Click & read the links below.
PS: Ashley, try not to always generallize everything that would be stupid thing to do, you can't compare human to animal body and how it works. Even in the animal kingdom, onions/garlics could be bad to dogs but good for monkey, same with human, one has no problem with garlics while other may allergic to it.

You should eat those things if you like them and they agree with you. As for dogs, chocolate, coffee and tea are toxic for them, but I enjoy those things in my diet. You will be able to work out if garlic and onion family products are irritants for you. If they are irritants, they will cause problems. Meditators may choose to avoid these sorts of foods for other reasons.

My goodness you must be very busy. Conducting all this 'extensive research' into practically everything.
Is this like the time you found scientific evidence that dogs were vegan?
All the things you mentioned are fantastic for you. Garlic has been used in healing and medicine for centuries.
Maybe if you live on nothing but these things they will have ill effects but in moderation are excellent for you

I am well aware that onions are an irritant to animals, I have 3 dogs and a cat and make it my business to know.
With that knowledge though, I do feel its up to the individual to make the choice whether to remove onions and garlic from their diet, weighing up the pro's and con's. I personally don't appear to have any bad effects from them so I do eat them.

You have obviously already made up your mind about onions (which I have been eating for 50 years, by the way).
Whatever your "extensive research" says, onions and garlic are eaten with proven health benefits by millions of people.
I really wonder why you have bothered to ask this question when you are so convinced you are right.
