from the vegan diet and bacteria in a healthy gut. All the chit chat about B12 in vegetarians is a lot of hype. You would have to deliberately withhold B12 for 5 years straight to force a deficiency just to pretend you were right about it. But you can't do it for 5 years, can you?

Im not even going to mention the many ways that our bodies are opposed to a meat eating diet, but they are there. To answer your question, the reason meat eaters get vitamin b12 is because the vitamin is found in the soil in which the animals get their feed (gress, wheat, etc.) the B12 is then ingested by whoever eats the meat. The reason vegans dont get the B12 is because fruits and veggies are so highly treated, cleansed, etc. the naturally occuring B12 is removed in the process. Vegan/vegetarians that eat from their own garden or highly regulated organics, do get plenty of B12. Because the B12 is solely a plant based source, at it's core, is actually more proof that we were designed to have plant based diet.

Soy, tofu, miso, and root veggies are the best sources. B12 is actually a microbe not a vitamin. Our bodies derive cobalt from the B12 which is the only part that we use. B12 is neither found in animal or plant but in soil. Animals consume plants from the ground and their bodies use the cobalt from the microbe so meat based B12 is actually less productive than vegetation. Make sure you are eating the skins of the root vegetables. People don't need a lot of B12 in their diets nor do they need to consume it everyday. The cobalt derived stays in our system for weeks, month, and sometimes years. It all depends on you body. Soymilk is foritfied wiht it and potatos, yams, green leafy vegetables, ginger, carrots, and beets all contain sufficient amounts of B12.

One cup of Silk provides 50% of your B12 daily value. Cereals are fortified with a good amount of it too. Nutritional Yeast is another tasty way to get B12. Most things are fortified with a bit of it - just read the label. It stays in your system for a long time too...so if you don't get enoug on somedays you probably make up for it on others.

PS: You won't find it in vegetables and fruits unless they have visible amounts of dirt on them and you don't wash it off.

Excess doses of vitamin B12 are not going to hurt you. Your body can store it for a few years and use it when your consumption is low. This is one case where too much really is better than not enough.

I also suspect that the doses are high to ensure optimum absorption.

As far as I know, there are no good vegan sources for vitamin B12. Please note that deficiency can cause irreversible nervous system damage. Get a supplement.

Brits and Aussies love this yeast spread that is called many names, Marmite, Vegemite.. etc.. it's packed with B12

If you can find a local health food store that carries Nutritional yeast, that's also a great source. Sneak it into your tofu, gravy, mashed potatoes.. It's yummy!! Kinda cheesy or buttery tasting. Oh yeah.. sprinkle it on your popcorn..
