I used to get really embarrassed when I got woosy and saw yellow spots all over while getting a shot or having blood taken - a needle phobia thing for me. Then I got told that when guys are going through army basic training and get all those medical exams and shots that out of a big line of recruits a few of the "big tough ones" would just keel over. So I didn't feel so bad after that.

I think YOUR main problem is being freaked out about it ahead of time. That's giving you more problems than the blood test itself will. All the nurses I've ever had work on me were REALLY good and it didn't even really hurt - just that little stick the first time. My problem was all the mind games my head was playing with me thinking about the needles.

Anyway, passing out is no big deal. It doesn't hurt! My buddies and I used to help each other pass out way back in grade school, just for the fun of it. OK, so we were pretty dumb 'cause it was on a cement playground, but still - you get the idea.

When you get your blood sample taken you'll be sitting down, so hey - no problem. Right? The odds are pretty much against your passing out, but if you do it's no biggie. Just relax.

The first thing you have to remember is to stay calm. I work in a lab and see people getting blood drawn on a regular basis. People that tense up, I know it is hard to stay calm, have worse experiences. You just have to go in, sit down, focus on something else in the room. DON"T LOOK AT THE NEEDLE. It's the blood that make most pass out. Trust me, it doesn't hurt as bad as you might think!

And...if you are about to pass out, tell the lab employee immediately. They will stop the procedure and let you relax.

There is no reason you should. If you do it will be because you have got yourself so worked up and it will be a hysterical reaction.

I have donated blood many times and had more blood tests than I could count and never had any faintness or other reaction.

My daughter had never had a reaction when I took her for injections or blood tests, but one day her father took her and made a big fuss and she fainted and has done so ever since.

Don't be silly and it won't be a problem.

when they first get you to sit down, look in the total opposite direction to the arm they are taking it from. If you start to feel woozy you can ask them to lie down while they take it.
After it is done. sit or still lay for a bit before getting up. ask for a drink of water and then ~ your all done. enjoy the rest of your day!
