I've noticed that the ingredients on a pack of bread say that it usually contains sugar, which is the only thing I can see that may mean it is not suitable for Vegans and there's no milk/butter etc. Can you clear this up for me?
Also, Can I add raw cane sugar to my food? This hasn't been filtered, so it should be alright shouldn't it?

The bread I usually have in the house contains wheat flour, water, yeast, salt, and sugar. Oh, and loads of seeds!

raw cane sugar should be ok. Some kinds of sugar use a bleaching agent derived from animal products, so you could e-mail the bread people to check. Most shop-bought breads are vegan and many will say so on the label (or at least where I am in Scotland they do) its fairly unusual for a mass produced loaf to contain eggs, but some add milk proteins, so watch out for that. When in doubt, buy a bread-maker! I'm wheat intolerant so I make my own with a vegan gluten free bread mix. It says you can add milk and eggs to the mix so I add soya milk and a vegan egg replacement. You could probably do this with ordinary wheat bread mixes that call for eggs and milk too.

Raw sugar is usually safe for Vegans since it is not filtered but bread should not have added sugar....when I say added I mean other than the starter. If you really like this bread that you buy, I would check with the manufacturer, otherwise, I would look into Vegan bread options. I like the organic sprouted breads that are found in the frozen section of the health food store.

Hope that helps.

Bread may not be vegan because it may contain milk and a little butter- we make all our bread with soya milk.

Mass produced bread will normalyl contain milk powder.

Also, many bakeries use animal fats to crease the tins - it lasts longer than vegetable oils and so they don't need to grease the tin for every bake - that might be why they don't label it as veggie nor vegan, adn because its a process product they do not have to list the animal fat as an ingredient.

This came from Tate and Lyle with regard to Sugar in 2003:

Dear Mr *****

...I can reassure you that we do not use animal bone in any part of our refining process.

There are no animal products in the refining process or ingredients of any of our products... with exception of icing sugar, which contains egg white...

Yours sincerely

I crossed my fingers as I was making my way the frozen bread section in my first vegan shopping trip yesterday. I didn't know if my favorite bread--7 Sprouted Grain--would contain egg or milk. Fortunately it contains neither!

It's probably okay, but you may want to check with the company to make sure.

Raw cane sugar is always suitable for vegans, as it is not refined.

If the bread doesent contain eggs/animal fat you are ok.
If sugar is not made using animal products you are ok.

eat what you feel right or comfortable eating. vegan or not. educate yourself, learn your body. No one should tell you what you can and can not have as a vegan.
