I am trying to cut down on fat and "bad" cholesterol but I LOVE BLT's. I was wondering what are the best kinds of vegetarian bacon?

So far I tried smart bacon and it was gross.

Any brands other brands to try?

Have you tried Lightlife's Tempeh Bacon? I've seen tempeh bacon at some restaurants where they cut the tempeh in half by thickness and cut the cake into strips, season it, and fry it up. I think you can find a recipe for tempeh bacon in "Vegan With a Vengeance" by Isa Chandra Moskowitz.

Redwoods make a range of "Cheatin' meats", including ones like bacon. Most health food shops stock them. I would recommend cutting out anything bacon-like for a time (maybe a week, though a couple of months would be better if you can go that long), just to rid yourself of your dependence/addiction :) Then try some veg-friendly bacon with an open mind, not expecting it to be exactly like bacon but instead to be a tasty treat to replace bacon (I have no idea what bacon tastes like, so I can't comment on how similar veggie bacon is). You'll probably find that will work better than having a bacon craving, buying veggie bacon with high hopes and expecting it to taste exactly the same, and then noticing the tiniest differences and magnifying them in your own mind and convincing yourself that you hate it! Not eating bacon for a time first will also mean your taste buds will start to "forget" what bacon tastes like, so you might not notice a difference anyway. Good luck, and it does get easier as you get used to a new way of eating. You'll be glad you made the decision!

I have to agree with you on the Smart Bacon. I've tried a lot of different brands and the one that I found was the closest to real bacon was Morningstar Farms Bacon Strips.............I just toss them on a lightly oiled cookie sheet and bake them at 350 for 7 minutes..........they come out nice and crispy without being burnt. They taste great on a BLT.

I also use Bacos on stuff that requires smaller pieces, like baked potatoes.

Imitation bacon bits taste like the real thing and are crunchier. They are vegan friendly, too.
