Is there a correlation between drinking large amounts of soda and diabetes?? I have been over indulging on soda all of my life. My moms friend used to drink 2 cokes everyday at lunch and he has just been diagnosed at an early age of like 30 something. I mean diabetes is caused by high blood sugar, is there a relation?

Diabetes isn't caused by high blood sugar. Diabetes CAUSES high blood sugar. As to what causes diabetes, no one seems to know for sure, but there's some pretty compelling science that points to dairy products.....

yes and absolutely not!!

your mom's friend probably has a family history of diabetes?
your mom's friend probably is a couch potato?
your mom's friend is over weight?

do any of those apply to you?

Just because a person likes lots of sodas does not mean they are going to be diabetic. Same thing with sugary foods. Same thing with eating mostly french fries.

All those add up to overweight, but not necessarily diabetes.

Being a couch potato - lots of TV, lots of computer time, lots of video games. instead of basket ball or bike riding or other involved movement exercises just might lead to diabetes much faster than Cokes!!

the reason diabetics have high blood sugar levels is because their bods cannot utilize the insulin made by the pancreas in type 2. Type 1 the pancreas just doesn't make any insulin, so there is nothing to make the muscles use the sugars. Blood sugars are counted by how many stick to the blood, not by how much sugar a person eats or drinks.

If you are concerned, go ask your doctor. If you are a teenager, tell your mother you might need a physical for some sports activity or something. tell the doctor your fears.

Stress can be really bad. Fears like that cause enormous stress.

People who are diabetic will drink lots of fluids when their blood sugar is high. It is the body's way of getting rid of the sugar when it cannot use it properly. When you drink a lot of fluids you urinate more and the sugar is passed off in the urine. Sodas with sugar also help to raise the blood sugar but it won't do that unless you are a diabetic and your body cannot metabolize the sugar properly. Before there were scientific tests for blood sugars a diabetic was diagnosed by tasting the urine to see if it was sweet. Just an interesting fact. Please do not use the taste test.
