I have just found out that my soon to be husband doesn't think he has been tested for STD's (he's in the military) just HIV annually. The only reason this has been brought up is because he'll soon be returning from a deployment. Don't have any reason to think he has an STD but he will be tested when he gets back. I, on the other hand, have been tested annually and we have been together for five years. Is it safe to say that before he deployed if I had nothing he should have nothing either? Please don't put any opinions regarding his fidelity, it has been a hard, long time and I don't want any ideas in my head. Thanks in advance!

There is no such thing as an STD not showing up in any lab tests. Herpes and HPV can go dormant but you will always find evidence of it somewhere in the body. Herpes leaves antibodies in the blood and HPV Rna are found in cells.. These are viruses and never completely go away. It is possible never to have another outbreak of herpes or hpv after the initial episode. Antiviral drugs do a good job at suppressing outbreaks.
Bacteria Stds like gonnorhea can go away completely from treatment. It takes about 1 month after successful treatment from antibiotics for the DNA from chalmydia and gonnerrhea to longer be detected by PCR.
It is a good idea for both of you to have a full check-up before getting married. You also need to go to the gynecologist. Any infections ( like yeast or bladder) can be treated. I am more worried about your fiance getting exposed to neurotoxins and biological warfare. The check-up should be done by a dr. not affilated with the military. Getting him checked for exotic diseases or parasites should be done. He should mention the country where he was stationed at.
Please thank him for protecting our country!! I salute him!!

If you don't want any ideas put in your head, you shouldn't have asked.
It's true, many STD's don't show up for years but, you said you've been together for five years so, I think your covered. There are the possibilities that either one could have picked up something without having sex, it happens, and, believe this or not, from dirty bathroom seat covers. it's not a joke.

I remember a study we did in med school about this, you would not believe what we found on bathroom seats around the city from very bust take out restaurants.

It's good to know there are some people that do look for these things in life and, if more people did, there would be less to worry about.

No! Some STD's don't show up for years. He should be checked fully, too.
