Have you considered insulin pump therapy that way it is not as public when you thake your insulin and Medtronic also has a glucose meter that will take your BS automaticaly up to 1400 time a day thru a needle sensor that way no one will know what you are doing at any given time. i have been a diabetic for more then 30 years and been on the pump for more then 11 years you can ask your doctor about this kind of treatment for your diabetes

Hello-
I agree with some of the other comments posted before. I have had diabetes since I was 11 and despite people telling me "it doesn't matter what people think...", the reality is that at that age, it does. So does not being able to eat what you want when you want. It has been 16 years now and obviously things are much better and they have products available that make being diabetic less of a stigma. Yes, be discreet in taking your medicine, etc... Look into all the great brands of SF products (Murray's cookies are delicious and all Russell Stover candy is great) but also, talk to someone about the pump. I am just now getting trained in how to use my pump and I couldn't be more excited about it! Medtronic is a great company to deal with. Good luck with everything!

I was diagnosed with diabetes when I was 11. I am an adult now, but I understand exactly what you are going through. I felt weird about it for the first couple of years, but I realized after a while that doing shots and testing my blood is a part of my life and it really doesn't matter if other people have a problem with it. In fact, a lot of people find it interesting and will admire you for your strength. There are certain times/places where it is better to be discreet, but most of the time it is pretty easy just to do what needs to be done. :)

So, why don't you go to a bathroom stall or someplace private. I am 60 yrs old and that is what I do. I don't want people to see and stick their nose into what is personal. If I want people to know about my disease, I tell them. I have done demos at schools about how to check the blood sugar, have even drawn up sterile water in a syringe to show how to do it. But when I am taking care of myself, I prefer privacy so I find it. Even an empty classroom is good. If you are uncomfortable, then you need to make sure you have the privacy to do what is needed without everyone watching. Talk to the counselor at school if that is where the problem is. Otherwise, go to the restroom, to a stall and do it. Hope this helps. Know how you feel and I am a type 2 on insulin.

I also have had diabetes since early childhood. And it was hard for me in my teenage years as well, I felt very self conscious about it all. So, I just made sure that I did my glucose checks in the bathroom and the same for my shots. Honestly, after you mature a bit, it won't seem such a deal, but right now I know it's hard. Just maintain your privacy and use the bathroom to do your stuff.

i got diabetes when i was 7 and yes i felt weird. i remember that in 2rd grade a kid told everyone that i would make them sick if they played with me. he said i was doing drugs and stuff like that because of my insulin. as i got older i got to where i would tell everyone i was around that i had to do it and they could watch or turn away. i even let a few of my friends give my shots so they would feel like they were helping me. my niece started giving me shots when she was 5 now she is 12 and she wants to be a nurse. i would just do what you have to do and do not worry what others think because you have to do that to have a safe and healthy life. good luck.

My hubby was diagnosed at 5 and hes now 31. Hes fine doing it around family/close friends, but if its out in the general population like work or something then he goes to the bathroom to deal with all that stuff, he's only recently started testing at his desk at work.
