No, a woman does NOT need to be a virgin. In fact, even women with HPV can still get the vaccine. It won't cure their HPV, but it can possibly prevent getting a kind of HPV they don't already have.

If a woman has never had sex or any sexual contact then chances of her having HPV is pretty slim to none. So, chances of the vaccine working for her are greater, compared to someone who has already had sex and has a higher chance of already having the virus.

Many doctors (including mine) suggest ALL women get the new vaccine, whether they have HPV or not. The vaccine protects against 4 different kinds of HPV (two known to cause about 70% of cervical cancer and two known to cause about 90% of genital warts). Say, for example, a young girl only has one kind of HPV that the vaccine prevents. Theoretically, if she gets the vaccine, she'll be protected from contracting the other 3 kinds of HPV that the vaccine protects against.

Good luck!

no u do not have to be a virgin. I was not a virgin when i got my HPV vaccine. i go for the second one this month. After u do start gaving sex though, still schedule a pap smear, b/c the vaccine only protects against abt 70% of the cervical cancer virus's and 90% of the Warts causing virus's. so tehre is still a chance (although greatly reduced) of u contracting the virus.

good choice in being responsible for urself. :)

The whole idea behind being a virgin before getting the HPV shot is to prevent getting the virus before you become sexually active. So yes, after you are done getting all the shots you can begin to become sexually active, just remember to use a condom and birth control

Being a virgin or not is your decision and not the decision of the world of "Yahoo Answers". Just remember that you must take responsibility of your actions. Good luck in decision making. Be true to yourself and you will find the answer that is best for you.
