Nope it's not vegetarian
Edit: Sorry I accidentally posted it w/o finishing...
I could explain what gelatin is in my own words, but I'll just quote the IVU FAQ.
"What is gelatin/gelatine? Is there any alternative to it?
Gelatin (US spelling) or gelatine (British spelling) (used to make Jell-o and other desserts) is made from the boiled bones, skins and tendons of animals. An alternative substance is called Agar-Agar, which is derived from seaweed. Another is made from the root of the Kuzu. Agar-Agar is sold in noodle-like strands, in powdered form, or in long blocks, and is usually white-ish in color.
Some Kosher gelatins are made with agar-agar, most are not. Some things that are vegan that are replacing gelatin are: guar gum and carrageenan. Only some 'emulsifiers' are vegan. Gelatin is used in photography. Although the technology exists to replace photographic film, its price is currently prohibitive and there is insufficient demand. Hopefully, with the growth of vegetarianism and veganism, this situation will soon change. "

There are some vegetarian Jell-o type things that aren't made with gelatin.
Hain superfruits or something is one brand...
They come in a few different flavors... I've never tried them though.
Hope that helps.
Edit: sandstorms... I know... I'm wondering the same thing... Jealousy I guess...LOL

The fact is that Jello is made out of gelatin. Gelatin is usually not made from hoofs, but rather from bones and hides of cattle and pigs.
I would say that if you are trying to avoid eating cow or pig bones or hides, then you wouldn't want to eat gelatin.
For substitutes, you can try an Indian store. They ususally have some vegetarian substitutes.

Gelatin (Jell-O is the brand name) is made from the hooves, bones, ligaments, and hides of animals. Definitely not vegetarian.

Under the traditional definition of vegetarian - no it is made from cow bones. However, if you are a meat eating vegetarian (this forum is swarming with them) it is perfectly okay.

I don't know if there are vegetarian brands but Jell'O isn't vegetarian for sure. All this trouble was created by penny-pinching carnivorous bastards who decided to boil up dead animal bones to make desserts because they couldn't spare a few extra cents for making it from agar or plant sources.
And who is giving me thumb downs??

It is the residue of cushioning between animal bones. It has always been that way. No change.
You can, however, make your own veggie equivalent.

It's veggie. As long as you can't see meat chunks it's OK.
