Good or Bad experiences are going to be relative to what kind of camping you choose and how prepared you are for it.

A person who chooses to rent a cabin and have a lot of amenities on hand will have a good time. That same person may hate a weekend backpacking trip.

For the inexperienced, I strongly suggest starting small. Rent a cabin or rent a tent and head to a campground where you can drive to your site. If you find that enjoyable, you may choose to move on to the next step...longer term camping, maybe backpacking...or maybe you go in the other direction and get an RV or pop-up camper.

Like anything, it takes a while to get good at camping. Your first time out you will most likely pitch your tent incorrectly, burn some food, and get a sunburn, blisters on your feet, or get bitten by mosquitoes. (I came down with Chicken Pox on my first tent camping trip.)

Better gear and know-how will only contribute to a good trip. It takes a while to accumulate the know-how, and unless you want to rack up a large credit card bill, the accumulation of gear will also take a while as well.

Some other desire to be outdoors always also helps. I just don't go camping to "Go Camping." I camp usually because I am camping close to a place I am going hiking, climbing, or skiing. I enjoy being outdoors, so I camp often, but usualy because there is something else I'm doing as well. Some people "just go camping" to relax or just get away...that's good too.

Camping CAN also be cheaper than hotels. I prefer to camp, especially if my vacation will be in a place where camping is reasonable or rational...a trip to San Francisco or New York City might not warrant camping, but a trip to a National Park...I camp. The hotels are usually too expensive and too far from the attractions and scenic areas.

It depends, I love it. are you the outdoors type, I mean does sleeping in a tent bother you? Bugs bother you? Building a fire ok with you? You can rough it or get a campsite that has water hookup and electricity, too. I think for your first time I would recommend not completely roughing it as it might be too much for you. Some camp grounds have both camp site options (with or with out water, etc) try and see.
happy camping, oh and by the way, it is more fun with lots of people along.

PS: check on the laws, some camp grounds like the state parks prohibit fires and drinking.

Camping is excellent. I usually go about 3 times a year and have been going since I was 5. It does take a lot of work to pack and unpack everything you need, but definatley worth the hassle. It's fun and relaxing. We usually take a lot of people and everyone pitches in on food and drinks, so one person doesnt have all the responsibility which works out well. Give it a chance...if you don't like it...then don't go again!

There is nothing better in life. I assume that you live in the city if you have never been camping. Wait until you get out under the stars (and you can actually see them). I am going canoeing down the Colorado River this weekend. Whoever said it is hard is wrong. It is very easy and worth it. When you get back to town, you laugh at everyone driving in a hurry, trying to cut each other off. Then you realize that you probably drive the same way. But when you are just back, you can sit back and laugh.

Go do it and have fun!!

I love to camp! And I am not just into camping -I like to go on cruises and stay in nice hotels, so it's not that I don't like comfort.
There are times that I camp alone or with my honey, but I seem to really make memories when I go with a large group with all ages.
You can camp for a small fee or a large one depending on where you want to be. Cooking food outside is great - the more often you do it the easier it becomes. Enjoy life - go camping!

I have a female friend that I go camping with. She and I have been camping together for several years. She usually has all the gear that we need, and I provide the food and gasoline to get there. I also usually pay the campsite fees, and we pitch a large tent, cook food, fish, swim, and just have fun for a couple days. Can't beat it, when you are with someone you care about.

Camping is real fun but all in the party must enjoy themselves. I have travelled 200 miles and as we started to pitch the tents it bucketed down and we had to resort to sleeping in the car overnight. That is what you call a mess. Nevertheless you just have to make the most of it. Other times it has been brilliant! Be sure to travel light and take the minimum!

It's fun for everyone except there is always one jerk in the group who is too cheap or silly buy the gear and equipment needed to be safe and comfortable and then spends every minute complaining about lack of safety and comfort.
