I freeze and press my tofu. Check my profile for details.
But you absolutely want to either marinate it or cook it with a sauce. Tofu has no flavor on its own; it will absorb the flavors of whatever you cook with it.
www.vegweb.com has some great recipes for tofu.
And I agree you should try tempeh, which is an Indonesian product made of fermented soybeans. It's got a nutty, chewy texture and is good to make "patties," cut into chunks in a stew or casserole, or you can crumble it into a chili or sauce. Tempeh is also relatively flavorless, but it has a firmer texture than tofu.

I grew up loving tofu and I never knew there were people out there who actually hated it so badly! Maybe because it's so common here in Asia, where I am from.
There are many types of tofu. Depending on the kind you got, there are different recipes for you to try. My guess is that you've got the cold white soft kind. At home, my mom doesn't even cook that. She merely drizzles some sesame oil and black soya sauce and serves it cold. That goes very well with hot steamy rice.
Of course, if it's your first time trying tofu, that might not be the best choice.
On it's own, you might have some problems trying to fry it. I think it'll just mash up and disintegrate. You'll probably need to coat it with flour. Cornflour, tapioca flour..and the likes. :)
Still, it won't have much taste so you'd need to prepare a sauce/gravy for it.
I'd recommend sweet and sour. :)
Anyway, I googled tofu recipes and got this site:

Hope it helps :)

IT TASTES AMAZING! I LOVE TOFU! Yes, I'm a vegetarian by the way, you might have noticed LOL!
Some more tips for being a vegetarian, eat a lot of tofu and vegetables, of course, and if you're not a vegan then you want to eat a lot of dairy because meat does have some calcium. I don't like the taste of meat or the idea of slaughters, I'm basically a vegetarian for every reason available. But still vegetarians need a lot of protein.

Plain tofu is not going to taste like anything. Tofu tastes like whatever spices/sauces you flavor it with. When I pan fry tofu I use garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, a little salt. I place it in the pan and add a little teriyaki sauce(keep it from sticking).
The main thing you need to do is drain the tofu before you start. You have to get the water out of the tofu block first.

if you put some salt or soysauce on it when you fry it, it should be pretty tasty.
CUt it up into cubes, fry it, add soy sauce and/or sweet and sour sauce, add to your vegetable stir fry. YUMMY!!
You could try this. THis idea has gotten me a few best answers on this forum, so people must like it.
Drain tofu well...
Crumble the raw tofu or smash with a fork. You want it to look like feta cheese.
Put in non-stick skillet or other skillet with a hint of oil. Sautee with onion powder, garlic powder, a couple dashes of soy sauce, a vegetarian "poultry seasoning" and nutritional yeast if you know where to find it. Oh yeah, black pepper too. Wait till tofu is TOTALLY DONE before deciding to add salt, Because if you use soy sauce and/or poltry seasoning, it can get almost too salty without adding salt.
WHEN it's almost done (getting drier and not so "raw" looking, add salsa and/or diced tomatoes (you have eto wait til tofu is almost done before adding this because tomato can make other ingredients stop cooking. Weird but true.) Let salsa/tomatoes cook with tofu for a few minutes before removing from heat
Eat with tortillas and a dab of sour cream, more salsa if you want.
I call it my "Southwest style Scrambled tofu"

The texture is very meaty. However, as with all tofu, unless you marinate it before eating, it still tastes like a lump of tasteless protein.
Try marinating the fried tofu in soy sauce.

To fry it you need the hard tofu. Or you can wrap it in a cloth for a day and let all the moisture drain out. Then it can be quite nice.

Try General Tso's Tofu. It's the bomb.
Also, think of it like a sponge. It will soak up the flavor of whatever.
Baking it first to get the water out helps too. Or freezing it first makes it more solid.
Try tempeh too for something different.

Lol I hate tofu, its not good plain, even when fried.
Try using flavor sauces for your tofu, like frying it with oil.
Put in a veggie soup.
