First of all, there is nothing you can swallow that will cure depression. Doctors don't even know why antidepressants relieve the symptoms of depression. They all know that antidepressants don't cure depression, however, but they continue to prescribe them anyway... go figure.
The only true cure for depression is what is called mood therapy or cognitive therapy. It is basically a method of reprogramming your subconscious mind to help you think more positive thoughts. How do I know this? Been there, done that. Tried at least a half dozen antidepressants. None worked and the side effects were horrible. I didn't get any relief until I learned David Burns' method in his book, "The Feeling Good Handbook" where he tells you, in easy to understand terms, how to CURE your depression.

Thank goodness someone with depression has the courage to come forward and illustrate what I've been saying all along.... antidepressants don't cure anything. Read all the answers carefully paying particular attention to the one admitting she's still on antidepressants after "many, many years". She's partially correct, not all therapy works. But some therapies do... I was clinically depressed (major depressive disorder) to the point of multiple suicide attempts... it doesn't get much worse (unless you're successful). The ONLY way out was diligent application of cognitive therapy. It will work, if you do it according to Dr. Burns.
Here's a challenge: Find me one antidepressant medication that has cured anyone from "clinical depression" (major depressive disorder) and I will recant my statement that they don't work (upon verification). Cure meaning: no longer taking ANY medication for depression.

For a diabetic the best depression medicine is exercise and fresh air. This brings down the blood sugar which is a strong contributor to depression in diabetics and raises the endorphins which bring the mood up to par. Any use of mood altering medication needs to be closely scrutinized by your doctor because it can interfere with your sugar control and other medications.

the answer is no. Medications meant to lift your spirits, and then drinking alcohol, which lowers your spirits, means that overall, your not acocmplishing anything! Wsting your drugs, wasting your money, wasting your time, and possibly, just possibly, wasting your life. I take a few depressants each day to get through life after having decided that life, even when it sucks, beats the hell out of the alternatives.

Not all depressions can be cured with sunlight, therapy, exercise or praying. Some people have clinical depression that responds to nothing but medication. I know, I am one of those. There are many wonderful medications available to those who suffer from depression and you really need to discuss your options with your physician. Personally, I use Prozac and have for many, many years.

I noticed you are asking this under the diabetes section.
Cymbalta is very good for depression and diabetic neuropathy. It does take some time to get over the side effects though.

There are so many medications out there, it would be the wisest thing to do is check with your physician or maybe even a pharmacist. Please don't rely on word of mouth.
