Do chicken lay eggs naturally or are they given hormones or something to keep them constantly laying eggs. I'm veggie and am not sure if I should stop eating eggs? If they are given something to make them lay eggs for us I'm gonna stop eating them...

What most people don't know about eggs is in all egg farms including organic and free range egg farms, male chicks are no use to them so male chicks are crushed to death as soon as they are hatched. Very few will be kept alive for reproduction. Even in a free range egg farm, when hens are 4 years old and they stop producing as many eggs as before, they are slaughtered. Because their meat is too old to be sold as chicken meat, they are made into the chicken stock cubes or soup. Non free range hens suffer the same fate. But chickens can live up tp 10 years. The reason for slaughtering them is because they are old. We don't slaughter our pets because they are old. No societies slaughter their OAPs because they are no longer able to work.

A chicken lays egg naturally. It is the bird equivalent of you ovulating. You produce eggs without having hormones or sexual intercourse. The hens have had no contact with a male, so their eggs are sterile and would never hatch. If they had been fertilised the yolk would be the placenta feeding the embryo. Very nutritious and an excellent source of protein.

Battery hens are kept in a warm well lit environment without any natural light and only enough room to perch. So look for the free range label on your egg boxes, these birds have got a run outside and enjoy a relatively free life.So carry on enjoying those veggie omelettes ,and buy eggs layed from free range hens.

"Hens begin laying at 18 – 20 weeks of age and a healthy chicken will
lay about one egg a day. A hen does not need a rooster to lay eggs
and eggs are produced in response to day light patterns. The eggs we
buy in the store are not fertilized (they don’t hatch). The size of
the egg is dependant on the age of the hen. Older birds lay larger
eggs."

chickens lay eggs naturally.it is only in big battery hen operations that they use hormones so they can get a bigger turn over and more profit. organic hens are not given any hormones otherwise they cannot be labled as organic. i worked on a small farm and the owner kept chickens and she never gave them any sort of hormone or supplement apart from their feed . they were free range and only housed at night and they layed every day.

The chicken normally responds to light -- the trigger for egg laying is increasing light. Commercial they fool them by keeping a continuous even lighting. They also take away their eggs so they never has a "clutch" to set on. So they keep trying. Also they are able to store sperm for a relatively long time. Thus, in the wild they would lay 6-10 eggs a year and quit.

They lay eggs naturally, the more you remove them, the faster they lay again. The only thing most farmers do is feed a blend of food to produce better quality eggs, darker yolks. If you're concerned, only eat organic or free range eggs.

They're not "given" anything to make them lay eggs, but they are treated horribly. Check out www.cok.net for information on how egg-laying hens are treated.

To all the people above, if people cared about the rights of chickens then they would eat eggs but wouldn't eat the meat. The reason for this is that if nobody ate eggs there would be absolutely no purpose in keeping chickens and they would therefore die out.
We feed them, they feed us.
