Most soaps are made with animal fats; though, many are also made with vegetable fats and oils. The soaps made with animal fats will have the words "tallow" or "sodium tallowate" listed under the Ingredients. If the Ingredients don't include this, it is a vegetarian soap. Since I became a vegetarian, I bought soaps from Lush (vegetarian and vegan soap store; though kind of expensive), or from stores like Marshall's and Ross (of course I look at the ingredients first though).

I live in Toronto, Canada and I use a pure Olive oil soap from Honest Ed's on Bathurst and Bloor, and most commercialy made soaps today are veg oil based, soaps with animal fats in them went out with the horse and buggey crowd, Check Lever Brother, Palmolive and Ivorys website they all have FAQ sections.

My mother uses one with Goats milk in it, just shop around, there are some very good organic soaps from Health food or Natural foods store that are pure and have no animal products, it is matter of finding one you like.

Lye soap is made from animal fat treated with Sodium Hydroxide. Newer soaps have to use an oil treated with something to make it soulble in water. You can probably find a vegetable based product by reading the ingredients.

Some soap is made with animal fat. We used to make soap from the extra fat when we butchered a hog.
There are many soaps available that are made from vegetable fats. Kirk's casteel is made from coconut oil.

There are plenty of soaps that don't use animal fats:

Lush (www.lush.com) makes a line of soaps, shower gels, and all sorts of fun bathing stuff. They're rigidly anti-animal testing and all vegetarian (mostly vegan).

Pangea Organics (www.pangeaorganics.com) makes a line of vegan soaps without artificial ingredients.

www.veganessentials.com and www.veganstore.com also have a selection of vegan soaps from various companies.

If you are a vegan you don't have to worry, they don't use soap unless they have to. Then they buy "vegan" soap which is pure crap. It just moves the dirty, grease and grime around but doesn't actually cut it.
