The most widely spoken language in the U.S. (because America would imply all of North and South America) is English, but we technically don't have a national language. The reason is because we are supposed to be a multi-ethnic society, all languages are to be considered valid. That's why voting ballets, citizenship tests, census', passports, etc. come out in so many different languages in America. Heck--Spanish-English bilingual schools are becoming more common in the southwest!

This is the true embodiment of "America."

If you want to live in a country it is a good idea to know the language. We should not make it illegal for a person to not speak it we should let the market conditions work it out. If people are willing to employ non english speakers then so be it.

American is not a language. Americans can speak any language they know but generally in America people speak either English or Hispanic which are their national languages..

i feel that if they want to live here and have an work here then they need to speak our language..i have been to chinese resturants and i think most of them can only say " you like pepsi?" and then it comes out," you like pesi? and why should they speak english? in order for us to communicate..otherwise we are standing there with a confused look on our faces and sounding like what Carlos Mecia describes as De De Dee....
