After the Mahabharata war, Krishna took Arjuna's chariot to a remote place. He then asked Arjuna to get down. After Arjuna got down first, Krishna then got down from the chariot. Then,Krishna took Arjuna some distance away from the chariot. Then, he showed Arjuna the divine presence of Lord Hanuman on the chariot. The moment Hanuman got down from the chariot, the horses were burnt alive and the chariot exploded into pieces. That was the devastating effect of Drona and Karna's arrows on Arjuna's horses and chariot. The divine presence of Lord Hanuman on the chariot protected Arjuna from certain death at the hands of Drona, first and then , Karna.

Arjuna's chariot was hit by Divine Weapons such as the Brahmastra from Bhisma, Drona, Karna, etc. Brahmastra is the topmost divine weapon next only to the rarely used Narayana-astra, Pasupata-astra and the Sakti-astra. The Brahmastras could have burnt the chariot of Arjuna. But Lord Krishna supressed the power of Brahmastas hitting the chariot of Arjuna during the war. When the war was over, the chariot was no more needed. So, Lord Krishna wanted to allow the Laws of Nature (i.e., the natural power of Brahmastra) to operate without hurdle. So, He asked Arjuna to get down first from the chariot.

The Chariot and Horses of Arjuna were reduced to ashes upon Lord Krishna's abandoning it after attainment of Arjuna's objectives. -

After the Pandava army headed by Drishtadyumna and Shikandi retired to their tents, the 5 pandava brothers along with Krishna proceeded towards the camps of the Kauravas.

And they find empty tents and finally when the 6 reach the pavilion of Duryodhana, Krishna quickly tells Arjuna :
TAKE DOWN YOUR GANDIVA AND DISMOUNT IMMEDIATELY.
A puzzled Arjuna did as ordered by Krishna. After Arjuna got down from the chariot, Krishna released the horses and got down from the chariot. Interestingly now, the Anjaneya bannered flag disappeared also and in just few seconds like a flash, the ENTIRE CHARIOT BLAZED FORTH TO ASHES.

A stunned looking Arjuna and others were speechless and astonished by this development. Krishna replies to them :

Arjuna, this chariot , before had been consumed by diverse kinds of weapons. It was because I had sat upon it during battle that it did not fall into pieces. Already consumed by the energy of brahmastra and various other celestial weapons applied on you by Bhishma, Drona and Karna, . Now it has been reduced to ashes upon my abandoning it after attainment by you of your objectives.

Hearing the words of Krishna, Arjuna and others felt totally ashamed as their egos also got burnt . Arjuna was under the impression that it was his valour which singlehandedly won the war for Pandavas. Probably Almighty Krishna thought that he had to teach Arjuna some lessons as well ! -

The veritable fusillade of the arrows of the enemies was the reason. As Lord Krishna was there as his charioteer (Sarathi), he was saved. That was why, Lord Krishna asked him to first alight from the chariot and then He himself got down. The moment Krishna alighted, the chariot was burnt to ashes
